We have too many defenders....particularly tallish defenders...and tallish defenders who seem incapable of playing well forward

BJ to play midfield now.

If you can only find room for Blake as a forward....> try Johnson who has looked ok as mobile third tall HFF.

Thinking long-term.
Blake, Dempster, Raph > Lynch (as a defender).
Like your tall defender comment. If I was an opposition coach, I would instruct to keep attacking through Raph's man, as Raph just coughs it up under pressure too easy
