My pet hate

I am not a fan of the overly or exclusively negative supporter, but dont mind getting stuck in when players show a lack of effort or endeavour. Agree that there is no point going to the game just to rubbish your own team and also wonder how many games the overly negative people went to in the 80s, a lot of them would be fair weather supporters I think.
Still if I want to let go at the footy and get something of my chest I think I have a right, it is not life or death, but for 2 hours a week you can pretend it is all that matters in your life and vent all of your frustration, show all of your joy, be one eyed, parocial, biased and completely unreasonable. As long as you do it with good humour I think it is part of the tribalism that is following our great game.

I just think people should be more aware of those around them, especially with the swearing etc. Its hard if you've got kids with you and someone close to you is swearing their head off.
I go every week, but I one game I took my two year old to last year was the one where the kangaroos beat us. We didn't have our usual seats that week and were in the bay next to the cheersquad. As most know, they kicked the first five goals and as the ball continued to sail over our heads the crowd got louder and more abusive. Thats fine, but I happened to have a man right behind me virtually screaming in my son's ear. I ended up having to move.
People can barrack and shout all they want, but the social club has heaps of families and we should be able to expect a reasonable level of language. It doesn't have to sound like the front bar of the local pub.

Speaking of not knowing football, the old bloke sitting one row in front of you and two seats to your left Solar. Did you hear him bagging Zac all night? "No wonder Hawthorn got rid of him", "Hall kicked 7 on him, Rocca kicked 8", etc etc. Reckons Haile kicked 3 on him, pretty sure Jimmy Gwilt was on him for the first two.
Did you hear my mate get into an argument with him? Well pretty one sided really Laughing What a disgrace of a "supporter".
I must have been sitting near you too I heard him all night if the same bloke I was in aisle 20 he was starting to irritate me too there are some supporters who should just shutup and barrack for their team instead of bagging them.
Yep row E, eventually my mate couldn't hold back and let him have a spray. Shut hm up.

I'm really good at taking that philosophy... on Tuesdays!mullet wrote:In fairness most of these people seem to be a little older. They have probably endured some shocking beatings over the years and feel that no matter how far ahead we are still a chance of losing.
I am sure we are all different people at the footy where you dont think anyone can hear you.
Cut them some slack and just enjoy the win, otherwise you becomes just like them, and really what is the difference between them and some of the negative posters on here
I spent an entire offseason building up goodwill towards the guys who sit behind me. Told myself I'll just laugh.
By quarter time I was grinding my teeth... in the 2nd half I managed to get into the swing of enjoying their commentary, and that gives me hope that this season I can bring more tolerance for a group of die-hard Saints fans who have clearly been through more pain with this club than I'd ever wish on anyone.
(call of the day: "he can go long up the middle.... and now it's too late." in that time, nothing about the scenario up the middle had changed an iota - same players for both sides were standing in positions not moving up the middle, with motion on the nearside wing and open guys on for the switch.)

I have no time for the overly negative and insulting either. Every supporter can get frustrated but when it comes down to personal insults and constant negativity there is no call for it.
There has been times where Im left thinking "what on earth did you do that for"
Everyone has the right to their own opinion but sometimes the negativity is just too much.
Im fairly certain a player is aware when something doesnt come off quite right without a fan having to stand up and have a crack at them.

Im on the record as saying, like you, I'm taking a new attitude into 2010. You pay your money, you can support how you like. Much as its frustrating, Ill take a few "Oh dont go backwards, the goals are THAT way" over player bashing..and that seemed pretty non existant. The true test will be when #16 makes his return though lol
There was a bloke a couple of rows behind me who was terrific. Lots of loud calls encouraging the switch, telling them to set zones, and praising the short sharp handballs in defence that cause others apoplexy. Of you are reading this. please...welcome..stay a while with us!!
Hey Bam.. on a personal note..is young Brandon yours, or are you Uncle Bamm? (I havent quite worked out which one of you is Bam hehe). Thats a mighty cute lil fella you have there, he looked like he was having a blast..and it seems only yesterday I remember you guys bringing him as a babe-in-arms

No need for you to hate them (though they do test my patience when they do to the litter tray what we did to the Roos on Saturday night )
I was referring to cats with 2 legs from Geelong.
