However, it's not my call, maybe it was a case of nipping it in the bud before the usual suspects went beserk and ruined it.

I'd love to see a good solid GT thread weighing up the pros/cons, but I fear that's beyond the capacity of some posters here, and thus I suppose the locking might be justified...(just putting it out there)
Drawing on my experience of countless similar threads over the past two years, I made the call that that one was going down the same path as all the others ...

I could be totally wrong, but I don't think there can be a mature discussion about Thomas on here.

However, if a majority of the other mods disagree with me, I don't mind if the thread is re-opened and the discussion continues.

Sadly, upon further reflection, I think that's what it boils down too, and I think when it's all said and done, that's the honest truth.

A real shame for the board that such a basic subject is such a taboo.

GT isn't the only topic that creates that sort of reaction here.

Wouldn't it make more sense to deal with the problem rather than making some topics 'taboo'? :?

If Saintsational paid me enough to quit my F/T job to deal with the problems...and then hired a therapist....

A stich in time saves nine.

Deal with the problem once and it will probably save you time in the long run.

Anyhow, surely this site now has enough moderators to spread the load? I never understand the "I don't have time" response. Why do the job if you don't have enough time to do it properly?

Mate, we're at the point we either ban people - and piss off the free speechers - or let them post freely, and piss off everyone else. It's not as easy as you might think.

We've sent out countless warnings, have issued a new set of rules for everyone to abide by and have made it perfectly clear that repeated breakings of rules will result in bans.

It's a thankless task, but we do our best, given the constraints.

re the thread 'going the same way as others'.....

my next contribution to that thread was going to be about our greatest fear

ie .....barks , what was it , that we as a supporters group were the most fearful of as we were being gifted such a strong influx of talent ?

i can remember the discussions ......we feared losing our young talent after their initial 2 year (?) contracts were up ...to other clubs

surely, given the fact that our 'young talent' is still bonded and playing for the club ....gt did something right .....with the overseas trips , being a significant part of that result

who knows where the thread could of gone ......might have suprised everyone .....

certainly wont know when they get locked because of the 'chance' it will all turn to custard

I guess the point Gaz is that for every normal post put up by yourself and others, there seems to be a lot that aren't as well-intentioned...

Spot on, gaz.

Lord Voldemort (once more the man we cannot name, it would seem) did a great job at pulling together a diverse group of proven and potential talents into what was, for a time, a fantastically effective AFL team. It is hard to see how anyone cannot acknowledge this: I was heartened by Teflon's post earlier in this thread in which he did so (for the first time, in my recollection, but good on him).

Of course, the man had a massive ego and made lots of misjudgements (but which person in a responsible, high profile position doesn't do this?).

And it is arguable that he was never going to take us to the next stage" (personally, I have never believed that he was given a really fair run, but a case can be made either way). And it is possible that we now have the coach who can take us all the way: although nobody can be at all certain about this.

Anyway, this thread has actually been somewhat encouraging in suggesting that people on both sides of the divide are slowly starting to get some proper perspective on the Thomas era. So, in that sense, I hope that OWTS and the other mods might loosen their grip on the trigger just a fraction and let some of these debates run on for a while.

Stinger, I wasn't having a go at you, I was responding to Teflons "if you don't like it" quote.

My comment was not directed at anyone in particular at all.

Very fair - and that is one of our biggest problems on this forum.

We're trying to do the right thing, but we're certainly open to suggestions about how to get things right.

I don't see anything in the rules that limit free speech on issues provided it's respectful of others. Freedom is the ability to swing your arms - not slapping someone across the face.

IMO it would be preferable to lose a few posters than have the ridiculous situation where some St Kilda topics are considered taboo.

suggestion

judgement by peers

Mods / admin pick two ‘long term current posters ‘ who remain un-named and unknown to each other ……. until their term of duty is completed

For a term of three months they decide on someone being banned or not ….(if and when so asked by the mods / admin) on their perceptions of board behaviour ….and evidence (if there is any) put forward by the mods / admin

The decision must be 2-0 in favour of banning

After the three months , the outgoing pair are named publicly and two fresh ‘peers’ do their term of duty

I personally don't think anyone, even poochy, should ever be banned permanently from the forum simply for being abusive and difficult in expressing a view on football: there should simply be an ever-escalating scale.

Permanent banning should be reserved for spam bots and people who insist on posting hard-core porn and the like.

I'm personally happy to leave it up to the mods, as long as it doesn't become too draconian.

I do think that the mods are closing down too many threads ATM.

I think Poochy in all his incarnations had escalated the scale to warrant a permanent ban.

The Mods are a bit trigger happy in my view, but I must admit that the Forum is running better now than it has over the last 12 months.

i'm a bit 'not cool' on the poochy banning

i thought the slate was wiped clean .....with the new system

so he reckons we are going to finish 14th ...who cares

he also reckoned hammer had a degenerative bone issue going on with his knee and wouldnt play again

the other idea was just a suggestion........i certainly hold zero expectation that it would be implemented around here

I don't see how one thread on a topic that everyone seems to have an opinion on is hurting the forum. If the thread descends into a pathetic slagging match, ban the posters involved for two weeks. If they come back and start their crap again then make it two months. If they then come back and keep posting rubbish then ban them for life. Simple as that.

The people that continually go off topic and start insulting each other are of no value to the forum and there isn't anything stopping admins from geting rid of them for good. They are given an incredible amount of last chances on this site.
