Hawthorn are in a full rebuild

They do not see a 30yo Mitchell in their future plans - and got what they could for him

They also offloaded Jaeger O Meara

The other side of the argument of course is that Collingwood (a top 4 team) see Mitchell as value and a part of their premiership tilt.

Did I not say that? Or you just didn't like the way I framed it?

Point being, Hawthorn who as recently as 7 years ago were coming off a Three-peat, attempting a fourth, have chosen not to hold on to a Brownlow medallist and B&F winner just because he gets a lot of possessions.

Mitchell may end up a modern day Ian Stewart, who knows?

Totally agree, I also can see our starting midfield for R1 including names like Phillipou, Bytel, Byrnes and Connolly, obviously we'd have to squeeze Steely in there somewhere because they'll probably make him Captain for one more year before Phillipou takes over the captaincy.

Why would you replace Steele as Captain. Beggars belief.

I was just going with the flow on this site which is play all the kids because Ross demanded they become A graders as he's got unfinished business...you know it makes sense so get on board.

Starting midfield 5 this season imo

Steele
Crouch
Windhager
Ross (ic)
Jones (ic)

Wings
McKenzie
Hill
Wood (ic)

Able to go into the midfield from other spots

Billings from HF to Wing
Sinclair from HB to Mid/Wing
Clark from HB to Mid/Wing
Gresham from Small Forward to Mid

Depth
Owens
Phillipou
Bytel
Byrnes

This highlights we really lack quality midfield depth.

Jones would not be a top 5 mid in any other club in the competition.

I think Owens might be a starting 22 forward/ mid in 2023 and I’d expect NWM to play similar games to 2022 (15-20?)

NVM is coming to play this year.
Im confident if he doesn't get injured he will start the season in the 22 and be running off half back/from the wing by the end of the season.

So whose spot is he taking?

Sinclair?
Clark/Coffield
Hill?
McKenzie?
Wood?

Nas showed a bit last season - but was nowhere as good as any of those players

Zac Jones is inconsistent but his best is excellent
His 37 possession game where he was BOG by a mile shows what he can do if he’s fit and healthy and in a good spot.

His worst is poor

Can also play off hb and give drive

Pfft

None of these blokes are 2nd year first rounders. That chance is gone.

Sinclair took 4 years to develop
Clark is still developing,
Coffield can't stay on the field but I am fan.
Mackenzie is on the bench/sub
Wood is about to retire.

Hill and NWM are a class above.

Yep Jones better step up or his borderline not making the side if some of these kids step up..
Ross has already been pushed out of the midfield under Ratten on numerous occasions
Look for Sinclair to come in as Joey M flagged - best round the ball it’s his next evolution to greatness
Jones could play HB
I also think Owens will get a run not far behind Windhager
Ross will go out
That midfield Martin has put up is treacle slow/1 paced lacks class that Sincs will bring

Sincs should stay at HB

Prefer him running with shoulders facing the goal in space where he can use his legs and kicking rather than being at stoppage

Don’t fix something that ain’t broken

Should be possible because I'm led to believe our new midfield will be Bytel, Byrnes, Connolly and Phillipou with Sebby and Crouch being retained on the list as backup while playing mostly for Sandy. Steely will have to go to next level if he's to stop Philllipou taking his Captaincy in 2024.

You know it makes sense.

Big Year for Jones….can’t run round in circles and give the ball back or get sucked into opponents giving it to him cause he’s a hot head he has to step up
IF he does….adds another dimension
Who takes Sinclairs HB role u think ?

Dont agree
Our 1 paced midfield needs class - as Sinclair demonstrated against Pies. Rd 1
Players need to evolve
HBF nice position for those players who develop by seeing the game unfold upfield (think Connolly) it’s not a tough position to play and we have multiple options with Coffield coming back
Sincs time to shine as an A grade mid
He can always play HBF ….next challenge that also takes the side forwards
I’m a Connolly fan btw
23 is a gap year so find out
Joey is on the money imo

Question without any idea or agenda. What player or players have Ross not given opportunity to have gone on to make him look like a one dimensional, only gun players, fool?

I am asking from a development perspective. We know about Luke Ball but there are (allegedly) two sides to that bitter coin & he's hardly a development faux pas.

I get a sense that for a young player, you really have to earn your spot, if you are not willing to do more than a senior player then you are marking time. Very much a Paul Roos philosophy...right or wrong. They want young players to challenge senior players, to hunt senior players.

If there are none then that is at the feet of the "cobblers" isn't it?
