Re: Best value recruits
Vic Cumberland- wasn’t in our zone and we did a shifty in the late 1890’s to secure him.
saynta is the only one on here who saw him play so perhaps could elaborate?

Yep, I didn’t see him personally but was told he was one of the most dominant juniors ever seen at Langy.
Elite AFL star and tough as f#ck.

Pick 1 - Nick Riewoldt
Even first, Riewoldt delivered far beyond what anyone could have reasonably expected

With someone like Parker - and Jack Riewoldt
If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then most probably it’s a duck!
In other words
If a kid can seriously play as a junior often he can play as a senior!

Re: Best value recruits
Goose McGuire was a very astute selection, the leg fracture and compartment syndrome cruelled him unfortunately, but can't fault his selection in the 20's somewhere from memory

Goose was pick 21
Unfortunately injury means with about 100 games he wasn’t much value.

Re: Best value recruits
We actually interviewed Stevie J just before the draft at his house and we’re very keen but opted for the key defender instead.
Stevie J was still there at our pick but went 3 picks later to Geelong

Re: Best value recruits
Jack Sinclair - Pick 1 in rookie draft. If we had have taken him at Pick 3 in the National Draft and Billings at Pick 1 in the Rookie Draft we'd all be stoked that we got an absolute gun with pick 3 and then a handy flanker with a rookie pick.
Joey Montagna - Pick 37
Also great value
Josh Battle - Pick 39
Ben Paton - Pick 46

Re: Best value recruits
Agree with all of those
Sinclair would be good value as a first round pick, the fact he was a rookie - good call
Joey - absolutely 2* All Australian and 3 time RU B&F 280 games he was a star
Battle - yep should never have slid that far in the draft - ridiculous- he’s a good player - was always going to be
Paton - at 46 probably better than a third round pick… pity about the bad break.
Webster was also a pick of n the 40s
Fine player who got better with age and body continuity

Re: Best value recruits
I think we got more consistency from Billings rather than from Sinclair in their early years.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Thu 04 Aug 2022 7:02am Jack Sinclair - Pick 1 in rookie draft. I wouldn’t be stoked taking a player at pick 3 and waiting 4-5 years for them just to secure a spot or find a position to play in the seniors. It took Sincs 6 years at the club to become an elite footballer.
We were expecting a lot more from our number 3 pick and a natural progression and incremental improvement. We sort of got that and JB had his best year in 2019. He is yet to re-produce that level again

Sinclair as a rookie is definitely a high value pick.Scollop wrote: ↑Thu 04 Aug 2022 9:19amI think we got more consistency from Billings rather than from Sinclair in their early years.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Thu 04 Aug 2022 7:02am Jack Sinclair - Pick 1 in rookie draft. Joey at #37 as a dual AA, number of games etc also a tick.
Paton & Battle whilst reasonable picks do not fit the criteria IMO when compared with Wilkie, Marshall, Sinclair, Membrey etc.

Re: Best value recruits
Good player and good pick.
But best value?
We are not talking Chris Grant #105 or James Turd #79(?) with Gilbo at #33 or a full gun like Milne off the rookie list.

Re: Best value recruits
I would think anything beyond pick 50 who played more than 4 seasons of AFL would be a win. Number of games would decide value of 3rd round picks. I expect 1 and 2 round picks to play at least 4-5 season.B.M wrote: ↑Thu 04 Aug 2022 1:02am Team so far

Add in Sinclair ( Rookie Draft), Voss ( pre season draft), Tim Pekin ( pre season draft)
Don't think Milne would ever be captain of anything

Re: Best value recruits
My paternal grandfather was born in the 1890's, Me ? Half a century latter and very luck to be here I might add, as he was wounded on the beaches of Gallipoli and again in France before catching the Spanish flu.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Wed 03 Aug 2022 10:06pm Vic Cumberland- wasn’t in our zone and we did a shifty in the late 1890’s to secure him.

So I don't think any of my immediate family can help you out with Harry Vivian Cumberland, the oldest player to play at VFL level..

Vic used to kick sausage rolls on his wrong foot from the wrong boundary from 50 out with his eyes shut
He was so good they named a sausage after him

Re: Best value recruits
There is NO set criteria
Just good value for where they were selected
The later the selection and better the player - the more value!
Stephen Mile Capt - because imo he is the best value recruit ever - not because he was a captain!
