No, this is great, gradual handover and upsets nobody.

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
Gears must be providing something that the group values highly.
Don’t mind the co-captaincy strategy. Steele on his own from next year.
Am more pleased with Howard and Willkie joining the leadership group. Great effort from both of them.

Agreed, Byron. No better sign of a healthy club than bringing in players who start to grow as players and people.
Wilkie is particularly satisfying given his history.
Go Saints and congratulations to Steele. He's earned that.

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
Is it safe to say most of us didn't see that coming?
I gotta say I immediately liked it and thought once again the club is currently in great hands.
And I also think the whole leadership group the club has selected is very strong.
The best 22 each week will be well led.
And not forgetting the unofficial leadership types we also have.
Congratulations to the Wilkie and Howard.

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
I think Geary does not have a spot in the team, so Steele is basically skipper.

Steele, a 25 year old, match winning All Australian. Who would have thought?
Congrats for getting it right Saints. Also credit to Geary for his leadership until this point. I hope he recovers in time to regain a spot in the team, but I also hope by then that it is a very difficult task for him.

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
Good decision, makes sense!
It also means that the selectors will not feel obliged to play Geary every week irrespective of form....
Big shake-up of the leadership group augurs well for the future as there are quite a few others who will be very well qualified to lead the team in the years ahead.

I disagree, I think being co-captain still means they won't drop him unfortunately.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Fri 12 Feb 2021 3:46pm Good decision, makes sense!

IMO this is selfish by Geary. He puts the club in a bad spot not being able to judge him on form. He can still 'lead' the club just as much without the C next to his name.

Yes very selfish to break your leg and may never play again.The_Dud wrote: ↑Fri 12 Feb 2021 4:26pmI disagree, I think being co-captain still means they won't drop him unfortunately.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Fri 12 Feb 2021 3:46pm Good decision, makes sense!

Like think about your comment. This is the way the club can make a transition with dignity for a guy who gives his all.
So if or when he recovers then let’s make a decision on his form

I thought Roo’s transition was much more dignified than this. That’s what unselfish looks like.
Do you really think they’ll drop a captain? How’d that go for GWS last season?

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
It's a players vote. Obviously they think Geary is a good captain. He didn't vote him in.

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
It’s not a players vote for captaincy
It’s a vote for the leadership group
The Leadership Group and Coaches then decide upon the Captains
Then that is ratified by the board

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
What difference does it make?
It's obvious that the hierarchy at St Kilda rate him as a captain. He was voted into the leadership group by the players.

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
I like the selections. I particularly like co-captains.
Billings perhaps the odd man out for me. Just doesn’t stand out as a leadership type. Would have preferred to see Marshall instead.
Wilkie I think was a premiership captain at North Adelaide when we recruited him ? Could maybe replace Gears as a co-captain next year if he has good year.
Coff my tip to move into leadership group next year.

How do you know Billings is not seen as a leader
He was voted in to the Leadership group
What has Marshall done to be seen as a good leader??

Do you think anything less than 99.9% of all players / coaches/ board members/ supporters wanted Roo to captain in his last year? Do you think Roo didn’t want to go on and break all kinds of captaining records?magnifisaint wrote: ↑Fri 12 Feb 2021 9:41pmWhat difference does it make?

I believe Riewoldt should have and deserved to captain in 2016

And just buries Howard and Wilkie in St Kilda juices as well. Positive long term decision.

The club thinks we can win this year and Gears is the man to lead us to the holy grail. Half our list are in the sweet spot.The_Dud wrote: ↑Fri 12 Feb 2021 10:09pmDo you think anything less than 99.9% of all players / coaches/ board members/ supporters wanted Roo to captain in his last year? He put the team ahead of himself.
When Roo resigned we were in development mode with few at their peak.
Big difference.

Stoked to see both of them in the leadership group. Huge plus for our recent recruiting.minneapolis wrote: ↑Sat 13 Feb 2021 7:11am

But... “buries” them in St Kilda juices??
Surely if it’s juices were talking, we’d be marinating...

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
I must be the only one who thought Riewoldt was a poor captain especially toward the end. Great player up to last couple of years - but by then continually complaining all game every game about the service he received. Taught Lonie by example to behave in the same selfish way - only just beginning to get over it. And what about the way he led the senior players all through the 'we're too good/came too close to have to change anything' years? This talk of saint nick rewrites history for mine. The pity of it was, none of our leaders during his halcyon era took on the development of future leaders. Which is why we're where we are only now beginning to develop any.

There definitely was a bit of the tale wagging the dog after the Lyon era. I think it is a bit harsh to lump all of this on Roo though.freely wrote: ↑Mon 15 Feb 2021 11:18amI must be the only one who thought Riewoldt was a poor captain especially toward the end. If you look at the post Lyon era through the prism of where the club is today it's easy to see that as good as Roo's leadership was, he was but one fish swimming against a strong current due to the lack of quality personnel at evey level of the club. It's a much different story today and Roo would be the perfect captain for the 2021 team. No doubt.

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
1) Lonie is very unselfish
2) Riewoldt was rated in the best few Captains in the AFL and the clear stand out at StK. He actually played on a wing in his second last season and was RU B&F and should clearly have been AA.
Inspirational skipper who demanded a lot from his player.
Players don’t like demanding leaders unless they place even tougher demands on themselves. Riewoldt lived those standards and then some!!!

Re: When is the new Captain being announced?
Absolutely. Well said. Roo was basically the reverse of Pavlich. Pav was a great captain in some poor/ave Freo teams then elevated himself to a higher plane once Lyon came and the team around him became better. I think Roo would've been an even better Captain after our Watters/Richo dip had the team regenerated to a competitive level around him. That said - the 2nd half of his last year was hard to watch - he admitted he was basically on rails and not particularly useful once the ball hit the ground.Vortex wrote: ↑Mon 15 Feb 2021 1:29pmThere definitely was a bit of the tale wagging the dog after the Lyon era.
