Mini may have occasionally drifted up to the wing. I'd imagine he was in for more centre bounces today than he was for the entirety of the last two years. I'd also say his disposal has been damaging, but there just hasn't been near enough of it. He has consistently found teammates for scores and that's what he did today. I didn't count the number of marks inside fifty that were a direct result of McQualter kicks, but it was more than a few.

I think his only avenue back to the AFL is as a stoppage player. Sandy got absolutely smashed there today. I think he's going to have to show more at the contests to get back in, because AFL centres are much tougher, as is that kick inside fifty. He's not a long enough kick to be an effective link player. I think he's quicker than he's credited for (he didn't just have guys run into him 216 times), but he isn't a line breaker. He's going to have to win the ball in close and get it out to a teammate, or he's done.

in defence of stanley - im not sure he wants to play in the ruck. i think he sees himself as a fwd.

and his greatest attribute is his amazing top speed. you dont get any opportunity to use that on a small ground like TBO where the play is all in close.

Let him loose on the G where he can use his attribute. I think sandy/TBO form needs to be looked at with a slight grain of salt because it does favour some players attributes over others.

That's really brave.
Like I said, please f*** OFF. Or please come and tell me that to my face.
sorry, I shouldn't name call you're right, just thought Smith was one of the better players and I got a little defensive. for mine he did lots of the 'lenny' type stuff yesterday, which could be important for obvious reasons.

Rookie Coburg coach Adam Potter looked set for a winning debut. Sandy, it appeared, would have to be content with a narrow and gallant defeat in their first outing under Brett Lovett.

But less than two minutes later the season-opening match took an unpredictable, enthralling course.

A point from Jack Steven reduced the margin to nine points, then first-year St Kilda player Arryn Siposs showed possibly the truest boot and best kicking action in football when he drilled a goal, his third, from a long way out.

Now there was less than a kick in it. Supporters were giddy with excitement, as was general manager John Mennie as he described the final moments by phone to club president Gerry Ryan, who was in the UK with work.

Id agree with that - main point is Mqualter doesnt get enough of the ball full stop. Im also not as convinced at the top level that his decision making and ability to set up players is as good as thought.

IF he reinvented himself as the in and under/clearance mid I agree thats his last shot.

it hasn't been for a while though and rather than be forced to go back and work on it... he's gone back to goodness knows what

Its interesting and you're probably right, maybe Mqualters decision and ability to set up players isnt lost - but if not, where's it gone?

Maybe the issue here is that in 2009 in his best year Mqualter had that much defensive pressure around him from team mates hell bent on making opposition fwds pay that he got multiple opportunities to set up others.....that doesnt appear to be there at the moment.

re Mcqualter. etc,

the whole team was alot better in 2009.

I went to those games that year, and i thought we were nearly invincable. Great disposal for many many players. It has not been been as good since.

Then in a remarkable 2 minutes of play in which Jack Stevens, Reece Stanley, Will Johnson , James Magner , Tom Lynch and in fact every single Zebra player rose to another level and just willed themselves to get the ball forward and kicked 2 amazing goals , one of which took all of 15 secs as the ball was courageously marked by Johnson 2 metres out and as the siren sounded. We had won a game that so easily could have been lost but for the determination of team.
Round 1 vs Coburg Tigers

Sandringham: 16.12.108 Coburg: 16.9.105

Goals: Johnson 4, Siposs 3, Heyne 2, Lourey , Wade , Ferraro , Magner , Steven, McQualter , Irving

Best: Lynch, Steven, Simpkin, Johnson, Stanley, Ferraro

Reserves

Sandringham: 12.8.80 Frankston: 15.15.105

Goals: Meehan 2, Rist 2, Boland 2, Stapleton , Jones, Jetta , Barnes , Andreoli, Shakallis

Best: Fleming, Jones, Andrews, Smith-Cameron, Andreoli, Hallahan

Warrick Andreoli continued his good form amassing 27 disposals (14 in the last quarter)

Coburg started the last quarter better with 2 early goals to Contin. At the 11 Minute mark Rick Ferraro gave the Zebs back the lead but Carnell bobbed up only 2 minutes later to again wrestle the momentum back to Coburg. At the 23 minute mark, Brad Miller goaled from the boundary. James Magner kicked a running goal on the left to give Sandy a sniff and bring the margin back to 3 points, but all hope looked gone when Tuck took a contested mark and goaled to give Coburg a 9 point buffer, 29 minutes into the last quarter. From the centre bounce Sandy were able to get the ball forward where Arryn Siposs took another mark on 50. In his first game Siposs went back and again slotted from outside 50 to make it a 3 point ball game with over 30 minutes gone. From the bounce, Rick Ferraro got the clearance and belted the ball forward with players everywhere and a ball up was called. From the ball up a kicked was squeezed forward to Will Johnson, who took a grab in the goal square. He went back and slotted the goal as the siren sounded, to give the Zebras a memorable Round 1 victory!

This kind of thing, backs to the wall, blood and guts win, can only be good for the entire list.

Would love to see some vid of the last two minutes?!?!

I am still hoping Siposs is as good as my imagination has him. Collingwood has drafted based loosely on how guys perform in big games at lower levels.

Siposs was a big fish in a small pond but if you have fundamental footy skills, something he has, you are half way there. Steely nerves and a touch of healthy arrogance will come through at the higher levels also.

Strange what's happened to Mini, as he was one of our better ball users by foot up to some stage last season. I didn't think he was anywhere near as bad as some have been saying in the Sandy game, and I have seen the best players down to the worst in the comp, spray the ball out on the full at some stage in a game. I thought he set up a lot of play. I would however love to guys like Siposs, Johnson and Lynch get in the seniors.

Sipposs just looks the part. Looks certain of himself. Steven and Lynch looked ready. Winmar seems quite tall? Stanley did a few nice things (thankfully!) but was he clutching at a groin? And what about Magner. Sign that bugger up! How do these guys slip through...?

i just don't see how lynch is possibly going to be a more productive half-back throughout 2011 than either of those two. not that they're world-beaters, but he won't be either for another year or two, from what i hear. so if we're still going for a premiership this year then that would be a silly change.

on the other hand, if we're giving it away for 2011 now that lenny's out, by all means, bring him in.
He can kick it, and its called football. That makes him more productive for me?

I'm really surprised Stanley got in the best...I thought he worked hard to get through the game - he was obviously in some sort of pain - but I thought he wasn't too flash when he had the ball, and that wasn't too often.

As people have said here though - I think he is a lot more comfortable up forward, so I'm not going to read too, too much into his performance.

Thanks. Great footage.

Man the ground is small when you see it on tv.

I actually thought all the saints players showed something. Really hard on the small ground.

Hell of a lot to like about Siposs. Hes only very young but sheesh looks like he can really play.

Sandy watchers have been saying Rhys was hopeless and the Heyne is no good. I thought both of them were good.
