He left both clubs he coached in a much worse state than when he arrived.

And he preferred ready-made and recycled hacks over developing and encouraging promising youngsters like Lynch, Steven and Armo - that says it all.

He was all about taking short cuts and cutting corners, ... so it's no surprise that he only ever wanted the gig at Carlton if it fell into his lap.
Love your first line.

His overall development of young saints players was non existent. He wouldn't even let them train with his chosen ones.

You are correct re Brown Baggers too. Saw he had to do an interview before at least two people who would rather appoint the club's property steward to the coaches position than him, so he pulled out.

Very untustworthy person imho.

Lyon has no credibility. Can't be trusted for what he says and has no integrity. Tell us something we don't know

Loved and admired by the 10 players taking 60% of the salary cap.

Was Lyon successful?!

The business is about winning premierships

He did not.

You can call him a good coach, a very good coach or even an excellent coach

But he was NOT a successful coach

My take is
He was a good team leader, a good tactical and game day coach, a good preparer of a team for games.
Poor list developer, shortsighted about the value of young talent, stubborn with selection and didn’t evolve his strategy as the game evolved.

BTW
My stance that the coach is overrated is still that… they can’t turn s*** into strawberry jam
But he had high quality jam, and ultimately turned it to s***!

Exceptional plagiarist of Paul Roos ideas. Cook not a chef. Could not change menu or use new ingredients. (Seems to have had a chef's temperament but.)

Correlation between Ross becoming less effective as Roos advice to him lessened. Freo people fell for the act.

Saints while characteristically ham fisted may have eventually twigged to Ross' limitations so he bolted when the life raft came along.

Now a sad burger flipper on a low brow tv show. Looks embarassing when not defending his legacy because he is bereft of original thought on things footy.

Media conferences where he was described as prickly now look like someone desperate not to be exposed.

But he could turn high quality jam to shish in no time.
Freo went from a Grand Finalist to a 0-10 start the following year. Unbelievable.

He cannot be underrated enough for that feat.

He's a fair-weathered coach who enjoyed early success with strong lists or lists on the rise - but it's not a sprint.
The other coaches who evolved and stuck to their tasks, and dug themselves out of difficulties and developed their teams and their young players - they have left him in their wake. They are the time-honoured and the fair dinkum, good coaches who are still relevant and in demand. And, deservedly so.

Still OUR most successful coach in 40 years
Who has gotten us closer more often ?
That doesn’t mean ultimate success we all know that measure has alluded our club for near 60 years so tad obvious to keep stating it
Whose been more successful at StKilda since our last flag than Lyon??? I’m interested in your take...

You can’t have it both ways
“Lyon destroyed their lists”
He also took 2 clubs to GFs
More than your love child GT could dream of - he couldn’t even get us there with a super talented list!!

the shallowness of 'their' position
was on full display

that was the exposure speech/moment
nuthing

I think it is fair to say that the team tried hard for, and under Lyon (and his assistant Zac Dawson).

We were formidable for a season. Really competitive for two more.

We just missed the 8 under Watters in his first season, (and the first half dozen under Watson were decent) so yes, there was some good vibes overflow, but we were well into decline.

f****** Zac Dawson. I would have preferred it if that guy was never ever mentioned. Wonder if he still has the photos though.   We were 6th under Stan in1998. 10th under that prick Watson in 1999, his first year. Then he took us down to 16th in 2000 before he resigned, or was fired.

So I am not sure what you are on about in saying we were decent for the first half dozen under that miserable failure.

Saynta,
I'm sure Samurai Saint can help me out here, but we were 7-3 after ten rounds in '99 under Watson, after - check this out - an 89 point drubbing by Brisbane in his first game up at the Gabba.

And I must say sorry to Zac..sorry Zac...convenient scape goat, but Rossy did favour you.

Shane - sensible thank you and that’s how I see it
We’d been”up” for a while by 2010 we were starting to slip
Yes I do blame Lyon here as he needed to inject youth but didn’t - well known fact only brain dead muppets on here fail to grasp ...
That said, could the guy coach ? Stamp his style on a team? (unsure still on Brett here..) could ge galvanise a playing group to buy into his style and play for him?? Absolutely
All coaches have flaws
Lyons was development
But FACTS are he was 9 points and in 2010 a bounce away
As a coach for the “now” he was as good as any AT THAT TIME
Not so the future
GT was just a failure altogether

Serious question for other sensible posters on this thread
IF by miracle Saints made another GF
How would people feel about Ross Lyon presenting the cup to the team?
It makes sense, most successful coach in living memory passing that baton on so to speak
Welcome others thoughts.

Failure?

Lyon 9 points off premiership

Thomas 6 points off a GF against an interstate team on their home deck who had been the best H/A side for 3 years.

Can’t have it both ways

Either both are failures - not getting the job done

Or

Both were good coaches, but didn’t get over the line

Because I don’t think there was a great deal between them - albeit different strengths.

BTW
Best finals win in my memory
Vs Adelaide interstate with an injury depleted team!!!
Coach - GT

GT never made a GF
What utter inane rubbish are you peddling?
There’s a difference
Let me be clear Dogs lostvthe flag but they got there (yes yes Beverage has also won one so save your typing)
Who was more successful out of Luke Beridge or Ken Hinkley this year? (noting Goodwin was most successful)
How does Lyon win AFL coach of the year in 09 if he’s an abject failure according to you cause he didn’t win a flag ?
It’s really strange thinking
And to suggest match day there was not much between Lyon and GT is laughable - all knew at the time GT had “shoot out game style” as his 1 trick when that got found out (no surprise in prelims....hard games to win ) his style failed
Often says defence wins football
Lyon took that to a whole new level that Malthouse then mirrored in 2010
The difference could not be more clear
BOTH coaches had elite squads

“Yeah….nah””
