We don't have the most explosive midfield on the planet, but we're pretty good at the stoppages, particularly the centre ones. We lost the centre clearances last year only six times. Chances are we'll continue to lose the hitouts and at least break even in the clearances. We're no worse than middling in the midfield. The efficiency of our defence at killing and clearing the ball to me is a much bigger concern. Our forward line is plenty good enough if the other lines hold up.

Whaaaat....? Rubbish.

Pretty sure Jack Steven will be excellent this year, Dal will be great with Lenny and Montagna and Armo looks to be playing some consistent footy (he looks super fit), now we don't have the burden of playing Goddard in the midfield, Ross or Newnes have the chance to step up. Ross will be excellent. Still think Ledger can play also, he just knows how to win it. Supposed off half back and pushing up to wing as support will be fantastic as well.

It's not all bad



Don't forget free agency at the end of this year. We need to plan for 1year, 5 year and 10 years not just 5 or 10 years. Our midfield will be competitive this year and in 2014 add a young gun from Gold Coast or GWS and we will be great + our recruits from this year and another year into some of the young talent mentioned above...........I still feel like we are on the right track.

Some people are just negative here - I am very positive and think we are in a much better position this year in terms of quality and depth on the list for team balance.

My starting team would be:

Gwilt Fisher Siposs

Ruck: Hickey (the new rules just suit him better)

Inside 3 rotating through 2 onfield roles - Hayes, Armitage, Geary

Inside / Outside rotating role: Montagna and Steven

Outside running and link up role - dal Santo, Ray, Gilbert

These 8 fill the 5 midfield spots and 3 interchange places.

Forward line:

Two key forwards: Riewoldt and Maister

Three small forwards: Milne, Saad, Schneider

3rd tall: Stanley or Siposs (depending on defensive set up)

Substitute: Millera

Emergencies from:

- Jones
- Dennis-Lane
- Ross
- Lee
- Roberton
- Koschitzke
- Blake
- Dunnell

I like BFUSA's team.

I'd replace Gilbert with Milera. I like the idea of a Carlton like fleet forward, with a hardened engine room and a tight defence.

It won't happen. I expect Jones, McEvoy to be selected round 1.

I'm a massive fan of building a team of clever, balanced players, that have the support of a rugged, tough midfield. No time for turnovers, especially when you're not under pressure (Gilbert).

Nippy forwards require persistence, should go for it with two fit tall forwards in Roo and Beau to help out.

Would love to head down to the Dome on a weekend and watch Milney, Schnids, Saad & Milera running riot. Throw in Sippos & Riewoldt...

PS. I hope Sam Gilbert proves me wrong. He's still young, and was once an awesome player.

No O'Keefe or McVeigh for the swans, probably cancels out Dal & Lenny, but it will be interesting to see how we go as the swans midfield bats very deep.

I have to agree with Plugger66 on querying the selection of Len Smith as a great coach. That honour should surely be with his brother Norm, who coached Melbourne to all those premierships in the 50's and 60's.
