Does anyone have video of Mooney's controversial in the back
Geelong's first goal.
Gilbert flying for the ball, Mooney decides he can't compete and just cannons in to his back. The ball goes over the back for an easy Stokes goal.
If you are struggling to find it, it's about 10 seconds after Gary Ablett gets an incredibly soft free for holding at a stoppage.

for those who can see it, the free kick is here:

i was fairly sure it was a down-field free kick. jimmy was infringed against after he got rid of the ball, so the free goes to the place where it went afterwards. that happened to be right next to him, and zac was the closest player to that.Superboot wrote:I know it's been posted somewhere else, but it's interesting that Zac took the free.
He may have got a bit of a push (also by Mooney) just before Jimmy, but if the free was paid to Zac it was pretty soft and the whistle was very late.
Anyone know what happened there?

Yes I recall the discussion now. But if you go back to the video, by the time Jimmy was tackled the ball had gone way past Zac (who I think had gone to ground) and both Blake and BJ were much closer to the play and to where the ball went. I'm still puzzled by this, and I wonder whether he actually paid the free to Zac and just couldn't get his whistle to his mouth!.bergholt wrote:i was fairly sure it was a down-field free kick. jimmy was infringed against after he got rid of the ball, so the free goes to the place where it went afterwards. that happened to be right next to him, and zac was the closest player to that.Superboot wrote:I know it's been posted somewhere else, but it's interesting that Zac took the free.

Pretty sure the AFL came and out said it was the correct decision and it was in the back to Gwilt.Superboot wrote:Yes I recall the discussion now. So the umpire payed a free "downfield" when it had gone backwards, and to the wrong player? Blake was behind Jimmy and BJ was goalside of him. Zac was behind Blake.saintsRrising wrote:Pretty sure the AFL came and out said it was the correct decision and it was in the back to Gwilt.Superboot wrote:Yes I recall the discussion now.
