a few years ago while driving a cab I picked up Robert Harvey in Beaumaris and took him to 3AW in South Melbourne where he was due to go on air with Gerard Healey and Hooksey...he was very talkative...gave him my card and he even rang me back to drive him home...
and a few weeks ago, when hiring a car on the Gold Coast I had to pick up Rhys Stanley and Adam Pattison from Coolangatta airport and take them to the Labrador ground...really nice guys who didn't mind a chat

I met Robert Harvey a few years ago when he was doing autographs at the Chaddy AFL store. I also met 3 sainters(Can't remember thier names but it was sometime 2000-2003) at some school footy clinic in Berwick.
My mum and Nanna met Paul Callery. They were waiting for the bus to Waverley Park and he pulled over and gave them a lift to the ground!

Met way too many to detail. That is both players, officials & player managers from a lot of different clubs. Some are customers & a lot I see out when doing gigs on weekends & therefore see a lot at their most annoying & most alcohol fueled.
I don't really get excited about meeting footy people, except for the odd one here or there of course - but I certainly can understand people being excited by the prospect. Everyone likes something different.

It had a big impact on me too. I remember guys at high school were trying to explain who died & it was clear to me that none of them had any idea who Trevor Barker was...when I pieced it together eventually & worked it out - I just remember the hollow feeling. Even though I was too young to truly appreciate his whole career, I still knew enough & had seen enough to know how tragic this day was.Marcus1232 wrote: His death was like Princess Di's death to me at that age
It's a tragedy that no official DVD or package has been put together to honour Bark's memory.
Still remember watching the game VS Footscray on TV when the entire club, players, officials, bootstudders - stood on the ground in respect & They released his beloved pigeons - very emotional scenes.

Nicky Winmar rang me Sunday morning 13th Ausgust 1995 to congratulate me on the birth of my daughter. We had a great chat and he was really friendly and accomodating. My sister was a good friend at the time and she knew I was a die hard Saints fan.
Made my day as we were watching Saints beat Hawks replay during the labour the night before!

The reason why no official DVD has been put together about Trevor is that they do not want to be seen as making money from someones death. Told to us by Andrew Plympton.savatage wrote:It had a big impact on me too. We once wrote to Nicky Winmar and was staggered when he phoned us one Good Friday. I answered the phone and needless to say didn't believe him when he said Hi, its Nicky Winmar. He was fantastic, spoke to everyone in the family and as luck would have it, Saints were playing Brisbane up here the following weekend. He invited us to coffee, so we were beside ourselves. Unfortunately that week he skipped training and went walk about for the next few weeks, so we dipped out.Hawkesbury Saint wrote:Nicky Winmar rang me Sunday morning 13th Ausgust 1995 to congratulate me on the birth of my daughter. WE have been doing the Supporter Group thing for 14 years, so have met alot of our players many times. We knew alot of the 97 team pretty well, Siera, Spider, Heaters, Joel Smith and Brown in particular. Brett Voss is a favourite, he is great with kids. Most have been very friendly. Funny enough the one player who was the most surly, was Luke Ball. Max not over friendly either, just does what is necessary. Was great when he was younger, but become quite grumpy as we saw on field. Yet last year at the B&F he was lovely. Goose, nice but a big ego. Harves, lovely but quiet. Of our present team Sam Gilbert is great. Also Dal. Joey can be a bit grumpy from time to time. And Snides and Gardiner are very accomodating but bolt as soon as they can. Blake McGrath you can't shut up. Much like Milney. But my two favourites are, no surprises here Lenny and Roo. Lenny always greets us with a big kiss And Roo spotted me during the GF parade last year and yelled out to me, imagine how special I felt. Love our boys.

My younger brother used to live in Highett in a unit. He was having a housewarming and walked around to some of the neighbours houses to let them know about it. Lenny Hayes opened the door to a unit and youn ger bro (who's a huge saints fan as well) thinking quick on his feet made sure that Lenny and whoever else he lived with was welcome at his party.
Low and behold Lenny, Guerra (and one other sainter who has slipped my mind) wandered in with an esky on the day of the party. They sat in the corner of the back yard but were very accomodating of anyone who wanted a chat. They appeared to be having a great time, until Lenny received a call (I think from his missus) and they left in a hurry. It was the off season so they could relax a bit, but all seemed like thoroughly good blokes.

It would have been Bakes. They all lived together in Bakes unit in Highett.Moods wrote:My younger brother used to live in Highett in a unit. Aside from the fact that its a charity and the money doesnt go to the club, also it wasn't started by St Kilda.savatage wrote:Ummm...Trevor Barker Foundation???Saint Bev wrote: The reason why no official DVD has been put together about Trevor is that they do not want to be seen as making money from someones death. I have met quite a few in my time...
Most notably when I was a kid was Barks and Plugger. I have pics lying around of this short little kid standing next to the man mountain that was Plugger. I can't really remember what he said to me but it made my year.
In the late 90's I used to frequent drinking holes around the Cheltenham/Brighton area. Used to see many Saints players out on the turps. One night at Wild Bills at Southland I accidently bumped into Spider and when I turned around to apologise and realised it was him, I went all school girl like. He was great, told me to come over and join his group and have a chat. BBBH, Gavin Mitchell, Tim Elliot, Trianiddes (sp?) were amongst the group. Had a great convo with Mitchell.
Also spent a night of talking and drinking with Nicky Winwar and his brother at Jakes in Brighton. It was 99 so Nicky was the the bullies then.
Recently, I was given a pass into the rooms as a birthday present. Met alot of the players, most of it was a hi and bye type thing. I did have a chat to Bakes though. We share the same birthday and he thought that was really cool.
Oh and a few months ago, I was at a Saints Angels function. Max was a guest speaker. I was too nervous to go up to him and talk as I never want to feel like some freaky fan (even though I am). My friend organised for him to come over to our table and say hi. Let's just say, my face went bright red and I was determined never to wash my hand again

An awesome dinner
Years ago I had the honour of meeting Trevor Barker.
My sister and father attended a dinner at a private home with Lenny Hayes, Stephen Baker, Nathan Burke and another player whos name escapes me - they called him ropehead and he kicked a booming goal to win us a game againts Brisbane.
Dad passed away earlier this year and he rated it as one of the best nights of his life. Ropehead - and I am annoyed with myself for not remembering his name - was particularly attentive to Dad. Dad worked for the club for many years and knew alot of the old players and was at the 66GF - they all wanted to know about that period at the Club.

Apart from meeting players at Saints functions, most players I socialised with really were Bulldogs back in the late 80's, early to mid 90's. Super McPherson, The Hawk, Peter Foster, Ilija Grgic, Mick Frost (yes, our Mick Frost)...Oh, what great stories I could tell but won't - how times have changed and how differently things were handled back then when players behaved badly.
Seemed to be an obligatory phone call received re Super's weekend escapades most Monday mornings, man could he party!!!

I sat next to Tony Lockett at the Victorian Sports Star of the Year once. One of the highlights of my life to that point. Met Russell Morris the same night.
Met Nicky Winmar several times, the most recent in Perth at a Saints function a few years ago. Met George Young, one of my early heros, same day. Met Jason Blake in a Thai Restaurant in Richmond last year. He was a doll.

When we first started the supporter group we held a triple Brownlow Medal night with the Qld Essendon Supporter group. For those who may not know, that was Dicky Reynolds, Ian Stewart and Bobby Skilton. Essendon were very paranoid that Ian Stewart either wouldn't turn up or misbehave himself. But he was just fantastic. A really lovely humble guy, his family don't even know about his success. Dick was adorable and won all the womens hearts, just the sort of guy you would want to be your Grandpa. We picked Bobby up from the airport, he was nice but very official. Insisted that he couldn't come unless his wife came and we had to pay for her (the others lived here at the time). Then she didn't come and he pocketed the money.
