WEEK ONE Finals Team.
Gardi > Patto
Baker > Geary
Lenny > Armo
Ben > King
Zac > Demspter. I say Dempster for even though it is not like for like I think this is the most like player swap as it then frees up Fisher/Blake/Gwilt to not be the FB. If Bakes does not shape up though one of Demspter. The way Roo2 towelled up Sam, may make a few realise that Zac when exposed in a bad position by lack of midfield pressure is probably not as bad as they think he is.
Eddy v Mini.... Eddy broke hand at exactly the wrong time. Eddy played two of his best games for the club and looked very comfortable in the defensive forward role. Mini however is not the player he was and in particular in the offensive aspects of his game. Forward lines in 2010 get emptied out more and I think that this is part of Minis problem as well. Eddy superb endurance holds him in good stead for the constant running in and out of the forward line.
Widcards
Steven. Would have to be picked to play against the Crows. Otherwise will only play if injuries occur. Mini was once again lacklustre and so the door is still open for Steven. Eddy too is eying off Mini's spot.
Armo The quality of what Armo did against the Tigers was good, but the quantity was well below what you would expect with the TOG he had. Being fair his fitness may still be low after a layoff..but that will count against him in a high pressure finals. May be given another game the Crows to shine.
Selection not looking likely at present. In part this is also due to us playing another runner in the team and that Peake in the last half of the season has been performing well in this role.
Stanley Will play if either Roo, or Kosi can't. Is however only just a bit off demanding his own place. Given a bit more muscle mass and experience, which cannot happen this year, Stanley is a very exciting prospect as a key forward, third tall, or ruck.
Miles Great debut. But it is only one game and Lyon will favour experience in the finals. Hopefully will have earnt another crack against the Crows. Lyon however has had him in mind for something....Varcoe's pace is a handful for many:idea:
Comments
Baker's practice match form this weekend is going to be crucial. If he show little touch it may make Lyon reluctant to play him. Lyon showed last year with max that he has no room for sentiment in Final's Selections. A reasonable showing will see him come back to take on SJ.
Geary There is alot to like about Geary, but right hear and now he is turning over the ball, and not getting the goals he should tat present. He knows when and where to run and so i believe he will play many games for the saints. May just get squeezed out of the finals this year. Eddy's hand may keep him in.

My preferred 22
Baker Dawson Blake
Gwilt Fisher Gilbert
Gram Montagna Jones
Schneider Riewoldt Goddard
Milne Koschitzke Eddy*
Gardiner Hayes Dal Santo
McEvoy Dempster Peake Ray
*Pending fitness- if he isn't ready then I'd have McQualter
In terms of the pecking order from there:
Backs:
1. Geary
2. Miles
3. Simpkin
4. Gaertner
Mids/Small Fwds:
1. Armitage
2. Steven
Tall Fwds/Ruck:
1. Pattison
2. Stanley
Wouldn't want anyone from outside that group to be considered

Does anyone have an update on Eddy's hand?
Would think if he were fully fit he would be absolutely knocking on the door for selection in the 22 come week one of finals. But I'm not sure on the extent of his injury?

I like that. The only spots up for grabs in that line up for mine (if everyone is available) are Mini's or Dempster's.
Mini is in a three way tussle with Eddy and Steven. Eddy was very impressive before he hurt his hand, but I haven't forgotten Steven's three quick goals that helped swing the Geelong game.
Dempster or Geary, I don't know. May depend on the opponent.

Opposition will play alarge role in the makeup of the team especially the last couple spots.
Defence seems to be a contensious area:
Geelong: Johnson, chapman, Pods, Mooney, Burns, Stokes,
Johnson - Baker( if he plays if not Dempster)
Pods - Blake
Mooney - Dawson
Stokes - Gilbert
Chapman - Fisher
Burns - gwilt ?
May be one too tall now with Hawkins in the ruck, That may give Geary a spot with Gwilt or Gilbert loose man.
Eddy i think needs to stay has his pressure and attack on the ball is very good.
Try this:
B: Baker, Dawson, Blake
HB: Gilbert Fisher Gwilt
C: Gram, Hayes, Ray
HF: Monty, Roo, Goddard
F: Milne, Kosi, Schnieder
F: Gardiner, Jones, Dal
Int: McEvoy,Eddy,Geary(dempster),McQualter

Hace you left Peake out on purpose, or is that an oversight?older saint wrote:Opposition will play alarge role in the makeup of the team especially the last couple spots.

Comments:
McQualter - I do not know why there is speculation he will be dropped for the finals. He has been in our best 22 since mid 2008. Since rejuvenating his career in R12 2008, he has played 56/60 games. I believe he is firmly entrenched in the 22. Eddy in comparison has played 29/60 games. He is not entrenched in the 22.
Z Dawson - Lyon stated last week, that if fit, he's in the 22 guaranteed. It was quite clear from the weekend that we struggled in 1on1 contests in the goal square. S Fisher and Gwilt got dominated when isolated. This is where Dawson fits into our structure, and this allows S Fisher to zone off more, which he couldn't do v Richmond. I cannot however see Gwilt, Dawson AND Dempster in the same 22 for structure reasons.
Gwilt - Gwilt is his most damaging when playing as a Half back flanker, which allows him to run and use his damaging kicking skills. He also allows for Gilbert to push up to the wing if matchups go our way.
Peake - I think his run, carry and long kicks is needed in our team, and he has locked in a spot in the 19-22 spot. After getting dropped earlier in the year, he has played 13 games straight for us. In this time we have only lost games.
Armitage - would love for him to play as he gives us an extra goal kicker, as opposed to Geary or Eddy. Can kick them from 50m and is a tough bugger. May lack match fitness however.
The Geary v Dempster dilemma is where I see the only selection battle (assuming Baker is fit) in the next 2-3 weeks. If Dempster could shut down Chapman im all for it, but I doubt he can do this.
The only other concern is team balance when Dawson returns. The backline is sometimes too tall and too 1 dimensional (Blake and Dawson similar). This may see Dawson return, and Gwilt head to half forward, possibly into a tagging role (the role that Dempster did in last years Grand Final). Gwilt has a good mark and kick, and could do a job for us in the finals up fwd.
