Sam Gilbert under pressure

Post: # 961124Post evertonfc »

Sammy's having enormous difficulty dealing with high-pressure and close-checking situations.

Concerned that teams have worked out that he has real problems when forced onto his non-preferred foot. Still looks to take opponants on when there's a 10-15% chance of success; not sure why he does this.

Feel like he has to make the call within himself that doing the flashy, brilliant things aren't really what we're about. Last year he could get away with it when he was still a relative nobody. Times have changed.

He needs to deal with pressure and, when in possession, realise that he doesn't have an eternity to find a target and hit it.

It's hurting us in the back half at the moment and tonight I felt as soon as the Hawks had a man playing defensively on him, he struggled.

Some of the blame on the surface. If ever there's a player that relies on good grip, it's "Goose step" Gilbert.

Hasn't had much room, and is missing those great cut off marks from earlier in the year. Bit down on confidence. Other sides are suddenly making him accountable.

Would it have been worthwhile giving Sammie a crack at Buddy? Break the tag? Run off?

Still rather Sammy try and get himself back into form. He can play, he nearly cracked AA last year, he just needs to understand the importance of making decisions and executing skills under pressure.

I believe he can. I don't think the penny has dropped with Raph, given those errors he continues to make.

Both are fine in low-pressure matches (against poor sides) or where the tempo drops (think Raph in the 2008 prelim)...but these kind of matches are few and far between in 2010.

Coughing up the ball in the back half is just a recipe for disaster. We need to realise just how costly it can be.

Was tagged out of it tonight by Osborne.

Kicking will always be an issue, he is a rugby player after all.

Marking and goose-stepping still fine though IMO.

Gilberts kicking is highly overrated, in space, on the preferred foot. Can hit a target but turns it over numerous times.

Tagged tonight. Couldnt understand how osbourne was able to shut him out....

Very little blame is due to the ground condition in my opinion.

Gilbert needs to develop a right side. His short disposal even with his left foot costs crucial turnovers every game.

His style is only valuable in close or when free on the left side. While he has had many marks and kicks this year he best days have been when he takes a good oppo forward out of the game and creates a little for others. Right now he is getting caught too much.

Some other players are getting caught too much. I emphasise with Ross when Dempster was caught on the run. (in fact I was ranting wildly on how his awareness and team talk went missing).

Our kicking without pressure still lets us down too much and creates opportunity for the other team.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency

Nuh, Thats an excuse not a valid reason.

He just needs to work on it a lot.

What I meant to say. You just said it better. Probably should be forwarded to Ross Lyon.
