ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon has slammed the Brisbane Lions for unfairly physically targeting Nick Riewoldt in his comeback game.
After watching his side take a hard-fought 14-point victory at the Gabba last night, Lyon was fuming at the treatment of his captain whose frustration at the Lions tactic boiled over after the three-quarter time siren, sparking an all-in brawl involving every player on the ground.
"I thought some boundaries had been set and I thought they were crossed quite clearly.

the question is does the AFL have the balls (and the integrity) to enforce the "Baker Rule"?Unforgiven wrote:only going to be worse next week

it is a f****** outrage and they've got to be held to account.
the word is out that it is special rules for special players.
i'm starting a viral internet campaign on it.
the best thing they could do is revisit the baker case and come up with a more realistic penalty.
one or two weeks was the consensus.

sounds like ross already has, though he is a lot more diplomatic and measured in what he says than me.True Blue Sainter wrote:I'll join your online campaign too!
all one could ask for is consistency and there is something seriously wrong when a player gets 12 weeks without actually hurting someone.
Was absolutely thrilled with RL's comments tonight. Said enough without saying to much.
He also made reference to the 'melee' saying basically that if the umpires are not going to do anything, the team needs to stand up and defend the player. Dal was the first one in there which was good to see.
See Bomber, we can make comments about unfair treatment as well. Difference is, our players rallied around Roo, where YOUR players? Certainly not defending SJ. Maybe that is because he gave out as much as he received and initiated. See the difference?

because in the past retaliation is NOT a defence...unless your barry hall, or chris judd or another one of their golden children.
honestly another forward who gets the raw end of the stick is buddy franklin.
I wonder if its racism? the guy gets pulled, jumped on, punched, driven into the ground, but the minute he touches someone he gets 2 weeks. Players who do exactly the same get away with it.
Did buddy dump someones daughter or niece or something? because he gets pinged for hte most ridiculous shiz.

Ross's comments were beautifully subtle. He's right, too.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Hopefully this will mean all eyes will be on Nick and his opponent next weekend. The accepted best way to stop it is to pay a free kick early as they have done that in the past. Hopefully that will happen next week if Harry O or whoever is on him starts all that rubbish.

Ross Lyon - two weeks for unduly influencing the MRP. Unsportsmanlike and against the spirit of AFL. We simply don't need that kind of thing in the modern era.35...LEGEND wrote:Love ya Rossy......................who's a clever boy.Eastern wrote:Take Note Harry O & Nick Maxwell:

I just love the typical Herald-Sun hyperbole in the article. Phrases like "Lyon has slammed the Brisbane Lions" or "Lyon was fuming" are a complete fabricatiion. Ross made a couple of measured comments afer the game, but to say he was fuming is a complete lie. To me, "fuming" would be the childish tirades you get from the likes of Malthouse or Clarkson. Ross never gets anywhere near that level of emotion in his post-game comments.

However with a bit of luck the media will pick up on the Herald-Sun's hyperbole, make a bit issue of it and then the umpires will have their eye on it next week against the Filth.mullet wrote:Yeah totally agree. Agree. The print version is far more accurate than the online article. Ross was measured and deliberate and perfectly rational in what he said.
To say he was fuming is a complete beat up.

Re: riewoldt targeted unfairly, says lyon
A free kick to Roo after Buccannan slammed into him might have saved the whole event...but the 3/4 time mellee will be a handy revenue raiser for the AFL.bigcarl wrote:http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/l ... 5890222002
