our boring game plan that doesnt involve much scoring
in the last 5 games that weve been winning everyones saying how we dont kick enough score... dull to watch etc...
geelong have scored 529 points in 5 games (105.8)
hawthorn have scored 489 (97.8)
freo have scored 484 (96.8)
collingwood 452(round 8-12) (90.4)
carlton 471 (94.2)
bulldogs 560 (112)
all their supporters are at us... so whats our average over the last 5 games?
466...... 93.2 points over the last 5 games.... thats 2 goals a game less then geelong.... the most exciting team that runs and runs
not even a goal less then the mighty hawks
the bulldogs i admit have 3 goals a game more but they lack defense so teams that vs them also generally kick high scores also (they are 3-2 in that period)
i do believe we went into our shell during rounds 5-7... round 8 we opened up and since then weve been what i believe is very attacking aswell as keeping our defense right up
so how about people see the facts on their own team before judging ours

There's more to footy than just scoring.
Geelong under Malcom Blight were the all time highest scoring team.
And they did that over a period of many years.
They were unaccountable but just relied on a one dimensional game plan that involved them scoring more than their opponents.
Worked fabulously in the H&A matches.
But never quite got them over the line when it mattered.
Our game plan might not be as exciting to watch as the Malcolm Blight Cats but it is designed to get us over the line when it matters.
(And it wasn't the game plan that cost us the flag last year, it was the inept goal conversions).

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

most of the attacks is about our final scoreboards.....
go read bigfooty to see what i mean
and i agree footy isnt just about scoreboard...
its about tackling... evading tackles.. running.. kicking handballing etc...
and i believe we do that just as good as anyone...
on a dry night last night the scores wouldve been much higher from both teams.... (obviously)
we may have patches to run down the clock but so do every other team... the only time its not slowed down is in a tight contest when the team behind is in control of the ball... ie demons/collingwood game
the arguement here is that we dont score enough as a result of slow boring footy... yet we are only just behind the top running "freeflowing" teams
better then watching... the bulldogs be 40 points down then kick 6 goals in junk time when other teams have backed right off.... then calling it a high freeflowing tight contest (wb coll. wb essendon)
they get frustrated because unlike their teams we can control the tempo of the game for not just a little bit.. we can keep them scoreless yet kick 6 ourselves... 90% time when a team kicks 5-8 goals the opps kick 2-3
yet we consistently block them out and hold it up in our forward line... backline even the middle
the anguish isnt on how slow boring we play but the other teams lack of creativity to beat it instead they go into panic mode and try vs us at our own game...
btw this is the 4th time weve kept opposition to less then 50 points this year

I quite enjoy a tactical and defensive game.
I like it when ww hold teams scoreless for a quarter.
I think it shows a high level of mental strength and concentration.
Whatever it takes.

"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....
You mean Geelong might have kicked a goal in the second half?wasaintsfan wrote: on a dry night last night the scores wouldve been much higher from both teams.... (obviously)
I don't care how we play, so long as we win the big one thats all that matters. I remember Roos and Sydney being critisized the other year about playing boring ugly footy, but they won the big one and thats all that matters! Whatever it takes I'm all for it!
The thing that does make me laugh is that other sides play ugly sloppy footy against us, yet we are always the ones blamed for it. So be it, I'll cop it all for a flag!!
Strength through Loyalty
Go those mighty Sainters!!
Go those mighty Sainters!!
Spot on with those comments St Ick. I have seen some teams come out against us in the past couple of years with 'uber' flood tactics, yet we get blamed for it. What is that old saying? Sticks and stones? Couldn't care less if we win a flag or 3....St Ick wrote: The thing that does make me laugh is that other sides play ugly sloppy footy against us, yet we are always the ones blamed for it. interestingly, they beat us by two goals in the grand final.wasaintsfan wrote:thats 2 goals a game less then geelong .... the most exciting team that runs and runs
our defence is magnificent, but there's still room for improvement in applying scoreboard pressure.
if the other team kicks a goal we want to be able to answer with two.

A wise man recently said that
Good offence sells memberships
BUT
Good defence wins premierships
That wise man was Geelong's former captain Tom Harley on TV during the game.
There is nothing boring about a game plan designed to win a premiership.
Whining whinger Thompson was simply crying because his pathetic puddy cats had their cream taken off them by the Saints defence.

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

Had to get up this morning as lying in bed listening to flogs on the radio saying they never watch stkilda games cos we are boring. Pity cos they missed a great come from behind victory on friday night. Oh yeah to come from behind there is a need to attack
2009 grand final has been described as one of the best ever
I want to complain about how pathetic Collingwood and Geelong are when it comes to scoring when i watch them live (at Saints matches).
Combined, in a whole game of football (two second halves) they have failed to score ONE goal. At the Same time in those four quarters the Saints have scored a respectable 13 goals.
This is destroying my enjoyment of the game and the entertainment for me.
It is an indictment on these two clubs that they are obviously so poorly coached and so lacking in talent that they are unable to score.
Pretty poor by these two clubs I would think.

That's just not true. I'm no great fan of Thompson, but he was quite gracious in defeat I thought; he made no excuses, and gave due credit to us.ace wrote:Whining whinger Thompson was simply crying because his pathetic puddy cats had their cream taken off them by the Saints defence.
What more do you want from a beaten opposition coach?
