How DUMB is the AFL? !!
We are in the middle of winter. The split round covers the two weekends either side of the shortest day of the year and what do they do? Put two showcase Friday Night games at the MCG.
Don't get me wrong, I love Saints games at the G but a bit more thought could have gone into the timing !!

The MCG anytime of the year is better than Etihad.
matter of opinion.....i prefer the dome any day of the week......or night....
.everybody still loves lenny....and we always will

Dome is much better to spectate from. MCG is poorly thoughtout when it comes to the crowd, and navagation for spectators.stinger wrote:Spinner wrote:Alternatively if the Carlton Freo game was at the MCG games tonight I would have gone....

The AFL reserve and MCC make it impossible to walk the whole way around, and GA seating is only available in very poor areas. At Etihad you can sit GA on the wing on the third level, you cannot at MCG.

it's an improvement on what wasMaxstar22 wrote:The other thing I don't get and maybe someone can explain it to me is...if it is a split round, why are there 5 games on this week and 3 next week??
Is there an actual reason for it or just the AFL in their wisdom think that it is a good idea??
originally a break for all teams
then THAT team decided to lobby for a game and the Sydney/ Melbourne thing came into affect
atleast now there are 3 games....... 1 each in three states
and the reasoning behind the no game to day is to encourage supporters to get to grass roots footy--- I went to the local ground and watched a couple of Saints play well

That team (Collingwood) was given another free kick in that their game v Sydney in Sydney was the ONLY game that weekend and the other 7 games were the other weekend. That weekend for the exclusive game just hapened to be the 1st week of the Vic school holidays. It was softened when it became too difficult to justify the free kick !!

Watching footy at Etihad feels manufactured....The MCG is in the element and feels natural.
At night the stars and crisp air.....During the day the sun and breeze. I cop the rain anytime as well!
Of course its a matter of opinion.....
Even on TV the footy looks better from the G.

Was at the G last night. What a game and what an atmosphere!! There is NOTHING like it. The dome is OK, but we've all become a bit spoilt I reckon re the closed roof. Real footy is played at the G, and nothing beats that atmosphere. Can't wait for next FRiday night.
PLus being an eastern suburbs boy the G is easier to get to as well

I like the Dome purely because of the Saints affiliation.Spinner wrote:Alternatively if the Carlton Freo game was at the MCG games tonight I would have gone....

Otherwise the MCG is where it's at for me...
I've been to the G so many times over the years, I feel at home there.
And the Paul Kelly song would have the same ring to it if had Etihad Stadium in it.

It will indeed be interesting if the weather casues the crowd to be less than the 52,000 who attended last year's game at Telstra Dome.3rd generation saint wrote:If it's pouring rain next Friday, wonder how many us would be wishing we we're at Etihad?
Will we as Saints feel 'cheated' that we gave up our 'home ground advantage' in the interests of letting more fans see the game, only to find that the very reason for Telstra Dome's existence, the roof, has been ignored and no more/less even got to see the game live?
Obviously putting to one side the argument that we need/want more games at the MCG.

Personal attendance is free (not for your guests) once you pay your annual subscription.Bernard Shakey wrote:Wow is MCC membership free now? Where can I sign up?saintspremiers wrote:I like the MCG as I'm an MCC member and can get in there for free.
But it can be bloody cold in winter.
Tonight, being a barmy warm winter's night, the G would've been terrific.
Same as club membership and reserve seat at Etihad once and if you pay in one lump sum.
The good thing about the MCC membership is that seats are on a walk up basis.
If you are keen you can get great seats, but you do have to learn to tolerate opposition supporters.

Two Friday night blockbusters at the MCG in a split round.
The AFL is not so much stupid as greedy.
The AFL is not intersted in the clubs making money from match attendances.
They are interested in the television rights money that goes to the AFL.
One team has a HOME game on MCG Friday night games.
Maybe it is called a home game because people stay in the warmth of their HOME and watch on TV.

If the AFL had any brains they wouldnt do anything to increase TV rights. They should also not allow games to put on TV so more people go to the games. If they are going to show it on TV it should be on an hours delay. Wait dont people complain about that. Also they shouldnt let the Saints play a home game at the G. Wait people whinge we never get to play home games at the G.ace wrote:Two Friday night blockbusters at the MCG in a split round.

The OP is about the timing of these two games. It is my opinion that the clubs, the fans, the tv networks and the afl would be better off if both of these games were played on the Saturday afternoons at the G or the Friday Nights at the Dome. They had choices !!
