You can make anything out of those stats, hodge is slightly ahead but I would still take BJ, think he is more team orientated.

"St Kilda's Brendon Goddard has emerged as the game's MVU - most valuable utility.

He has competition. Luke Hodge, Adam Goodes, Jimmy Bartel and Matthew Pavlich are players who can dominate in various roles, be it ruck and forward for Goodes, forward and midfield for Pavlich, and midfield and back for Hodge."

If i was able to play with one of them, it would be Hodge. But i am very happy with Goddard at the saints and love watching him play.

While a nice topic, far too early to call yet....Hodge is also a year older and has played another seasons worth of games.

BJ by a stretch, accomplished player in defence midfield and attack.

Maybe this year?

As opposed to Hodge who can only play defence midfield and attack.

Wish we'd drafted Hodgey instead of Ball & still had him playing for us. Would have been a double bonus then.

If you would prefer Hodge mate, then state it.

I think BJ is a much better forward than Hodge, wouldnt call Hodge accomplished in this area. Think he is probably a better mid as well, Hodge to me is a burst player in the guts, not an out and out mid like BJ can be.

I upset you or something mate, if so apologies, never been my intention.

Hodge has made his name as the quarter back, playing without an opponent and racking up the pozzies. Dont get me wrong he is a great player but BJ can mark better, is one of (maybe even the best) kick in the comp. Hodge may be better in the middle but BJ isnt far behind him there but BJ is miles ahead in the forward 50 so i think thats puts him just infront.......

Oh and im not bias in any way!

No point complaining now, we had no option to draft Hodgey that draft, we had the pick behind the Hawks. Only winge we can have is Judd instead of Ball but even still, whats the point?

When looking at that 'superdraft' of 2001, we really lucked out with some didn't we? Clarke over Bartel, Ball over Judd, Goose, just looked at the list and between 36 & 40 were Joey, GAblett & Sam Mitchell. Actually, Swan @ 58?! Anyway, the depth of that draft is a different topic for a different day!!!

edit: BJ any day but yes, Hodge is a top player too, just too much of a different player to compare IMO.

I reckon they're completely different players. Hodge is tougher and harder (not that BJ is soft) Hodge pretty much wills the ball into his arms. Both are superb kicks. BJ slightly better overhead, (once again not that Hodge is poor) Both have match winning abilities and can turn a game. I reckon both clubs would be pretty happy with who they've got. It's like comparing Riewoldt to Brown - ridiculous.

Gee that number 37 might be a player too. Maybe with retrospect I would have drafted number 40 and then backed up with number 36.

I thought we had 1st choice with Bally (my mistake). Judd would have won us a flag (But who can be sure?)

People argued on SEN today that Hodge suffered more from white line fever, and was no longer Mr Nice Guy when he took the field.

I couldn't help but reflect on which of these two players, drilled a footy into the Freo cheer squad.

How are they different?

Both are leaders. Both are pricks and assholes that you would rather next to you than playing against.

Both are in the top 5 players in the competition and score extra points for being able to play all positions. Both have a weakness in key defensive roles however them playing those positions are rare.

Both guns however for the sake of it. BJ because he should have more years left in him...albeit one...however both are stars and deservedly so.

Geez that's a difficult choice.

But I'd have to say Hodge is the better one. They are both highly skilled, but Hodge's attitude and toughness makes him a rare gem. He hung incredibly tough in 2008 in both the PF against us and of course the GF. Since then, his team has effectively dropped the ball but he's continued to give 150% for his club.

Goddard is terrific, but he hasn't yet quite reached those heights of effort and performance.

I have to say that, whenever he appears on TV or radio, he always comes across as a pretty decent bloke.

Am I right in thinking that both Hodge and Bakes come from Colac? If so, it must be a place where they breed 'em a little rough around the edges but with a lot of heart.

This is a cr@p comparison.

Hodge aint a utility for a start - he predominantly plays back floater with an occasional midfield run when his tank allows. Hodge has NEVER played fwd for any stretch.

Goddard IS a utility - hes played allover the shop.

I see the Hun had bartel as a utility - WTF?....hes an in/under mid FFS.

Very few true utilities in the game IMO.
