2 ways of looking at it, I agree with Spinner that any players developement is influenced by the side they play in, Armitage may and probably would be a lock in the Richmond midfield at this stage of his career IMO, Jack probably would be now part of our side but may not have played the amount of football he has to date? hypothetical of course?
On why we drafted the mid instead of the medium forward? At the time I think it was fairly unanimous that we had plenty of forwards but could do with strengthening our midfield depth, remember at the time Goddard and Gram were both playing in defence, Gilbert had not really emerged yet and Ray had not played for the club, Baker was out with injuries suspensions and not a regular part of the side, many thought he was washed up. A "ready made" as the wraps at the time said AFL hard inside mid looked like a good fit as at the time Dal and Joey were really outside running types who didnt tackle or win contested footy like they do today.
Heinsight a wonderful thing, I would love Jack reiwoldt in the side, a forward line of Roo x2 Kosi Milne Schneider and a fit X clarke would have been very good, not how the cards were dealt though.

What has qualifications on where I played or coached have anything to do with giving an opinion on a Forum - you said it yourself, you have none....yet you come on here and comment on my opinions...which in essence means you rate your opinions higher than mine...
BTW - I have played the game, those who play SS forum matches could probably back me on this - although I am long in the tooth (approaching 40), I still run a 13-8 in the beep test, and am still pretty quick, and can take a grab....and keep myself in good condition, probably due to being a PE teacher, who specialises in Cricket and Footy (Cricket #1 sport)
For your benefit..
Of the leagues you listed I have played the following - mainly due to moving around Australia a lot.
NTFL (tas) U19's/Senios
SFL (Sydney) (U20's/Senior)
WA Amatuers (A-Grade)
EFL (Vic - known as EDFL then)
SFL (Vic)
VAFA (A-Grade)
SFL (Vic)
Masters (Vic)
Not great - something though..
But unfortunately have had the following injuries
Broken Back and Ruptured Disc 91
Broken Wrist (Scaffoid) 94
Ruptured ACL/ML 2000
Broken Ankle
So I could play a bit....Coaching???
I left that to to school teams I coach...because I have Coached Cricket Clubs for the last 12 years and a lot of my energy goes into that (I prefer Cricket and am better at it)...I am Level 2 in both though
So since you wanted my qualifications to give an opinion, there you go.....is that up to your standards..I really hope so..
I didn't actually know that we had to be an EXPERT to give a comment/opinion....
what exactly qualifies you to bring me down???
I was once asked,by a current day saints player who we were playing the next week,and then two of them followed up asking if we could still make the 8...

Can you imagine the uproar at the time if we had drafted Jack?
There's still numerous nuffies around that believe Fergus Watts was only traded for because of his dad & our first pick this year is only at the club because his surname is Winmar.
At the time we were crying out for young midfielders with Banger coming towards the end, BJ still developing and Joey very inconsistent. Armo will be a very good player, its probably a mix of his development being slower due to a lack of commitment early, struggling to get a senior game in a strong side and a coach that doesn't reward young players with game until they prove they can do everything that he wants.
Having said all that, yes it would be nice to have Jack in the side, just like it would be nice to have Judd & Bartel instead of Ball & X, Cyril would have been nice instead of McEvoy and gee, how Bevo didn't identify Dean Cox and Aaron Sandilands as rookie selections I will never know.
Please someone from the club poach BigMart as head of recruiting now!

Disagree - some games he certainly gets there, needs consistency, don't think speed is a problem, fourth in tackles, and had tough competition to get into the team.Armitage - as nice as he looks as a player....for some reason cannot seem to get there...most likely pace...which cannot be improved
He's young and will definitely definitely improve. Bit of an odd post imo.
Tommy Lynch may turn out better than Jack.

Clearly every draft pick we have ever made has been a mistake given the players we should have taken, because richmond have had such a good record of draft selections right?
maybe we should sack our recruitment team and get the tiges recruitment team.
maybe we can get their 27 year development program as well

there would have been no uproar at all if we got jack. family tie drafts happen heaps in footy. i also have not read a single negative word about us recruiting winmar.Animal Enclosure wrote:Can you imagine the uproar at the time if we had drafted Jack?

fergus watts was a very a special case. not often a ceo's son is up for draft. might be the only time in afl/vfl history that this happened?

Mr Magic, I don't understand your baiting Big Mart. He states his opinions strongly, but backs them up with good reasoning and always has something worthwhile to say.
Many on here realy enjoy his posts, and to take strongly expressed opinions as personal put downs is a bit beyond the pail. Lighten up a bit.

You would have a pretty good team if you could redo all your picks..
Just looking at some, but not all picks before Armo and from Judd on...
Kosi = Didak
Oliver = Osborne
Ball – Judd
X Clarke = Bartel
Ferguson = Staker
Dickets = Sandllands
B Schwarze = Rutten
Murray = Sewell
R Clarke = Stanton
Pfitzner = Nathan Lovett-Murray
Mullins = Harry O
Corr = Priddis
Would make us a pretty handy team
I think you can say similar about most clubs though.
Real qustion is not whether any one pick is right..but whether over time you get a reasonable number ok. No one gets all thir calls right.

That's my issue with you entirely.
By all means give your opinion, but everyttime you dress it up as a statement of fact and i see it, I'll address it.

Please show me where I ever stated I spoke for anybody other than myself?
you have you opinions,
I have mine
But thank you for your concern.
If I might be so bold as to suggest it might be of more value directed towards BigMouth who seems to ahve difficulty accepting any pov other than his own might possibly be correct.
But again, unlike him, I'm only posting an opinion and not demanding you or anybody else accept it as gospel.
And btwe, I don't accept the term 'baiting' regarding my questioning of his credentials.
If he's going to make categrical statements then I feel I'm entitled to know wht experience he's had to make them, or whether he's just blowing smoke up our ar$es like so may other internet heroes.

Virtually every statement on here is an opinion. Don't be intimidated or take it personally when someone puts there opinion in a forthright way. Either agree or disagree and demonstrate why. In all the years I've been on the forum , I haven't noticed BMart play the man unless provoked. its only footy, mate.

Have heard a lot of people blame X for us getting Raph (from Raph haters of course).
I think most would have been happy if we had've drafted Jack, but a lot of those would have turned if he hadn't come on as he has (and let's face it, until this year he had simply shown flashes of some potential)

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
I read his posts and find them generally smacking of arrogance.
I also find him to be either wonderfully insightful in hidsight or premature in categorical evaluation.
You want examples?
'Nick Heyne is a dud'
'Gaertner is woeful'
'Our recruiters are hopeless because they took ... instead of ....'
But hey, you might enjoy reading posts/threads like that - so good luck to you.
But at the same time please allow me to voice my opinion on what I consider to be his over-inflated opionion of himself.
I disagree with his opinions (if that is what they are) because I think he is an overblown horses' ass.
Is that acceptable as a reason?
Or do I need to elaborate further as to why I disagree with him?
Unfortunately the advice you want to give me is not followed through by the very poster you seem to be defending - he certainly doesn't seem to accept any contrary view to his own - just dismisses them without reason as being wrong because they differ from his.
But that's ok?
I apologize to you if you feel I've somehow lessened your enjoyment on this forum by questioning on what basis BigMouth makes his pronouncements.
I understand that now, given his resume, when he states who should have been taken when in drafts it's based on his zero experience or knowledge of the recruiting area.
When he comments on administrative procedures it's based on his zero experience and knowledge on that area.
When he comments on playing AFL it's based on his zero experience and knowledge of that area.
But you may feel zero experience and knowledge is sufficient to make one an 'expert' in suxh areas.
I don't and would never presume to lecture others in an area I don't have experience or meaningful knowledge in.

Retrospective drafting is the easiest game in town
go back through the forum......he was my pick.....we always said we needed two roos....well...we could have had two.......
.....i wanted green when we drafted that little sh!t beetham.....everyone knew he was up himself.....except our guys......if i was doing the picks we would also have roden and carrazzo.....
...and i wouldn't have wasted a first round pick on a wife beater either....
.everybody still loves lenny....and we always will
