50 meter penalties

Post: # 925724Post GSG »

The stats in the paper today showed the Saints had five 50 meters paid against them. Not having seen the full game, how did this happen? More to the point, how can they be so undisciplined??? Is this a record?

I was listening to the broadcast on ABC radio during the third quarter adn the commentator - Peter Schwab, former Umpires Coach, claimed that teh 2 paid against Milne were very unlucky - he called them both a 'Milney 50' and left no doubt in my mind that they were paid becasue of teh player rather than the transgression.

It would seem on the face of it that not giving Milne warranted free kicks is now insufficient from th umpiring fraternity - they need to penalize him even more?

The first one was there in my opinion, the second very unlucky. All of Sam Gilberts were there. Just like our footy at the moment it was undisciplined. We can blame the umps and just say they hate us or look at it honestly and get it out of the game.

Sad, very sad - and there is not a damned thing we can do about it.

One of them came moments after Milne had his legs taken out.
The only possible reason that free wasn't paid was because "44" along with "13" are on "The list".

I haven't seen the replay but from memory, the first Milne 50 was after a holding the ball decision. He had three Bombers players on top of him and as soon as he was free put it in the hands of the one who had 'earned' the free. I don't know what else he could have done.

Milne likes to employ a side to side move, waving hands thingo, while standing on the mark.

Obviously to put the player off, however by not being careful, I think he may have unfortunately moved forward a fraction while doing this move?

By the way it's "metre".

As in "Two incorrect 50 metre penalties were metered out to blackmarked Saints".

Just watching the replay now.

The first 50 against Gilbert, definitely there. The umpire whistled and called "move it on" which is what he is supposed to do before calling "play on". Gilbert moved on that and was pinged.

However, the Gardiner play on call last week, the umpire did not give Gardiner the warning he is supposed to give. It was just play on without any whistle.

The one where Milne was penalized for running over the mark was rough because I thought the Bombers player "moved off his line" at least as much as BJ had done the week before.

I don't believe the umpires are out to get us, but the standard this year has been utterly shocking: no consistency whatsoever.

"metered out"? I think you mean to say "meted out".

As I described above, Milne's first 50 was just beyond comprehension. I've just watched it on the replay.

The free was to McVeigh who ended up lying on his back. Watson and Stanton both tried to wrestle the ball off Milne but he didn't give it to them. And I don't believe he is under any obligation to give it to anyone other than McVeigh. As soon as his hands are free he puts the ball on McVeigh's chest, not in any aggressive manner at all. The umpire immediately blows for 50m.

Edit:
The second 50 against Milne. The bomber player took the mark and took one step back. Milne was still about 3m from where the mark was taken when he took a step forward and the umpire pinged him again. But he was still about 2m behind the mark.

Compare to earlier in the quarter where Schneider takes a mark on the lead and his opponent just keeps following and never takes a step back.

Yes there is.

We can ask Plugger66, who claims to be Adrian Anderson, to have 50 metre penalties that "are there" to be paid against both competing teams.
About as much hope though as the Pope giving away all the catholic church's assets to the poor because it is in the book.
