Rnd 2, 1989 Saints vs Blues
On footy flashbacks Channel 7, Sunday 11.00am.
Possibly the best game I ever saw at Moorabbin. Another one not to be missed for all those Plugger fans out there.

Awesome Game,
Plugger at his best. If I remember correctly 10 goals 7. 17 scoring shots on the fullback of the century is just amazing!
I was only a kid at the time and I used to go end to end at Moorabbin to watch Plugger. I was up at the South road end right up the back of the terrace. Late in the last quarter when Carlton got the ball into their forward line I thought we'd lost it and slid down the grass bank at the back and was walking back to my family who always watched from the outer wing.
I was pouting my way around to the wing but when I came up the bank to the back of the outer wing the saints got the ball out of defence, Jack Daniels big handball (glad he didnt kick it!) to Nicky to Plugger. And my new vantage point was right behind Plugger as he lined it up.
Never have I been more nervous watching a game and never have I been more pumped when it went through.......until Rooey's soccer goal in the prelim!!

Probably the greatest and most exciting Saints win I've ever seen, given the circumstances. Sheldon to Jayson Daniels and then the handball to Nicky.
The crowd went mad. I was jumping on my seat. Plugger knew he kicked it from the moment it left the boot.

Got the last quarter on tape.
Gives goosebumps of the 'good ol days' at Moorabbin.
Lockett dominating like he always did, always.
The crowd chanting Stkilda after every goal....you just get flashbacks of the great place.
It's funny,we were not much good, but they're my favourite footy memories

I think from memory, my idol Joffa, centred the ball and I thought it was all over but somehow we got the ball back.

SOS said that the ball grazed his fist as he tried to punch it. No obvious deflection so the umpire was always going to pay the mark. Looked like a clear mark to everyone at the ground.Stillwaiting wrote:Was at that one, one of the great days at the footy. I seem to remember that carltscum moaned about pluggers last mark. Claim that SOS had part of it and plugger plucked from his grasp, or maybe my memory is fading!
I actually though Winmar had made a mistake in passing the ball to Lockett and should have had a shot himself. He was probably 60 out but he could do anything on his day.

I was on the the other side of the ground near the social club fence, it appeared to me that Plugger reached over sos and plucked before it got to SOS
I love this club

Thanks for the tip.
I've got a VHS tape of it somewhere, but will be good to get a better copy.
Thought we had lost that game when one of their hyphenated mosquito fleet kicked a goal to put them ahead; Fraser-Murphy?
Then despair turned to jubilation.
There is an iconic photo of Plugger with both fists raised a second after the ball had left his boot.
He knew he had kicked it.
And over on the other side of the ground, when we saw those fists go up, the place went ape-shyte like I have never seen before or since.
Grown men were crying and yelling in jubilation till they had no voice.

Probably the best win at that ground .... ever.
Was a turning point of sorts. We were just so shyt for so long..
Finally had a team that was competitive.
There is a bloke in a hat jumping up and down in the outer after he kicks it...
I'm about three over to his right
Never looked like missing.
SOS and Plugger actually broke even that day. They were both in their prime.

that was another day when he also kicked 10 ... against the bulldogs at moorabbin in 1987, when he kicked his first 100th in a season. however he makes the same gesture when he kicks the match-winner in this game.Enrico_Misso wrote:There is an iconic photo of Plugger with both fists raised a second after the ball had left his boot.
he was wearing a black armband in that iconic photo. sorry to be a pedant

That's an interesting fact BigC.
I thought he kicked his 100th againt the Dogs at the Highway end, so the camera angle would be all wrong.
But I may be wrong.
That was a great day too. I remember jumping the fence with 1000s of others.

he did kick it at the frankston end. he must have turned around to greet his teammates when he did the hands up. pretty sure i'm right, but i'll check it.Enrico_Misso wrote:That's an interesting fact BigC.

it's amazing watching this game that robert harvey (at 17 years old, admittedly) does nothing to show that he'll go on to be one of the greatest players ever. certainly no tom scully-like heroics.
though in the return match in round 20, he had 36 touches and kicked 4.3. guess it took him 14 games to come of age... still didn't get brownlow votes though - probably because winmar kicked 8.1 and kernahan 10.3.

how in the hell did brett bowey get the three brownlow votes that day? what an embarrasing admission of umpiring bias.
lockett's was the definitive best on ground. seventeen shots at goal on the full back of the century for 10.7, including the match-winner with 43 seconds left.
oh, i forgot it is "fairest and best".
also, it is funny how the wheel turns isn't it.
SOS is now one of our great assets in building a fabulous defence and Plugger considers himself a former Sydney player.
