St Kilda Cliche List
I may be the only one, and if so nobody will join this discussion, and that will be fair enough... but is anyone else tiring of some of the cliches floating around our sports media? Some are wrong, some are years late, some I've heard ad-f******-nauseum from the likes of Robert Walls and in the Herald-Sun that one wonders why we need commentary at all... we could just replay the audio or reprint articles from last year.
Ten of the most boring, tiresome Saints-related cliches so far this year:
1/ Gilbert really gives them that run from the backline.
2/ Milne has really improved as a player this year.
3/ Geez, Baker's a tough nut, isn't he?
4/ They miss Reiwoldt up forward.
5/ Kozitschke is nowhere near Reiwoldt
6/ They get numbers behind the ball
7/ Clint Jones is right up there with Cameron Ling as the best tagger in the league.
8/ King's in the twilight of his career.
9/ Dal Santo/Milne has really worked on the defensive side of his game.
10/ ...release Goddard forward

This one really bugs me....the media have been saying this since Grant Thomas' last year as coach...along with, "Milne would never have passed that ball off a few years ago"groupie1 wrote:2/ Milne has really improved as a player this year.
Its like the perception of him is stuck in 2003 or something...that was frickin years ago that Milne was a selfish player, he has been doing the team things for years now!

Yes. Couldn't agree more. This is why many of these quotes give me the s***s - they're just repeating a perception, whether its current or not.saintlee wrote:This one really bugs me....the media have been saying this since Grant Thomas' last year as coach...along with, "Milne would never have passed that ball off a few years ago"groupie1 wrote:2/ Milne has really improved as a player this year.

Always heard during September.
Before a final (said by most) : "I'm confident this is our year"
During the match (said by old ladies behind you): "Sit down! Some of us are trying to watch the match"
As the game slips beyond our grasp (said by evertonfc): "Where's the pressure? Intensity? I didn't pay $200 for these tickets to watch you roll over."
After the match (said by others): "There's always next year."
After the match (said by evertonfc, usually whilst kicking something): "Not good enough, we didn't want it enough. We need to trade for player X & Y, cut the dead wood, and draft a bunch of decent kids."

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

If we are onto general footy cliches.......
"never had a better pre-season"
"gut running" (or "gut-busting running")
"training the house down"
"we've got the close one"
and (my personal favourite)
"there's absolutely no evidence of teams tanking for draft picks" (not just a cliche, but a delusion)
