Lyon may turn to untried tall for a boost - The Age

St Kilda supporters have been crying out for Stanley's inclusion since his encouraging pre-season games. The athletic ' might be regarded as a more natural forward than the emerging ruckman McEvoy, but he gathered only a handful of touches in the VFL last weekend.

Things that stand out to me, Stanley was mentioned after McEvoy and Pattison.

Club 'far from certain' on Jason Gram.

Lots of options were mentioned though.

''We're working through it. Do I play Sam Fisher forward again this week, do I bring in a McEvoy or [ex-Tiger Adam] Pattinson or Stanley, who is exciting but raw, or do we just have the one tall and go smaller?'' he mused yesterday.

'' It's not an exact science, it's part art form, but we've got to try and keep winning and finding our form while we are experimenting. ''Certainly on the weekend we didn't walk away saying, 'Gee, we're rapt we kicked seven goals'.

''We were really quite frustrated as well and I think everyone has got to understand … it's a work in progress and a challenge. We think we can get on top of it, but it's clearly going to take a little bit longer than two weeks.
''

However we are entering a "softer" period and so soon could a good time to try him out at the higher level. Last couple of Sandy games have been only so so through. However the Sandi forward line has many marking targets at present with Cahill who had been going ok squeezed out.

I'm not so sure about this 'softer' period we're coming into.

I'm not sure how the club will go about the next fortnight. We have Carlton and Essendon, arguably the only two sides that got through our defence last year. Think I am right in saying they are the only 2 teams to score over 100 against us last year.

They both go all out attack and throw caution to the wind. This may cause us problems. Other sides playing us for some reason still try and think they're way into attack, and after 26 of the last 30 sides to play us losing they still haven't woken up that that's how we like it.

Ratten gets off easy from the media scrutiny. Knights cops all the flack for coaching his side to go only one way,but Ratten is just as bad. Carlton leak goals like a sieve.
So will we try and exploit this and play a more attacking brand and bringing in another marking option,or will we try and hold back the rising sea again

I would not rate either the Blues or Dons as having the best defenses.

So if you wanted to try out a young tall forward, then the next two weeks would be quite good weeks to do so.

Sounds like Stanley is a ruse to me...bit of smoke and mirrors from RL. However, I agree that the next 2 weeks would be the right time to try out a Pattison, Lynch, McEvoy, etc. up front. Of course, it is also a potential field day for non-permenant forwards like Goddard, Fisher, Blake, Gwilt, Zac, whoever. OR, maybe, just maybe, Kosi will boot them into next week.

They found a resonable formula against Freo. Goddard isn't the magical key, but he is definitly a step in the right direction.

The problem is that with gram and ray out recently, we need him to cover for those in the middle. I'd expect BJ and Kosi to be our tall target this weekend.

Edit: 3000 posts!!

I agree, but this is based on Gram coming back in this week, and it's not looking likely from all reports....

Any other way they could reshuffle so that Goddard could go forward and kick a few?

I was thinking if we bring in another runner, but that's not a flash hot idea. Geary and Armitage (while effective) didn't have large number games, which is what is needed to replace BJ in the middle.

So if Gram did miss, I don't think we would see many changes beside Big Mac in for King.

I don't really have an answer honestly. We seem one tall extra in defence, with Zac and Fisher both getting time up forward. Fisher isn't going to be let loose as a midfielder/winger when he is much more effective down back.

Against Carlton: Kosi FF, with a rotation with Big Mac so he can get in the ruck. The instruction to carry the ball and kick it deeper in the forward line. If our midfield can get on top, then Bj may be released up forward for some time, but if not, then I think we will just have the one tall and a small forward line.

Went to sandy last week - and Stanley looks a year away from being capable of making of an impact in the 1's.

Legs and arms like matchsticks and a chest like a teenage girl.

IMO he's a long way away - but then again what would i know - i woulda had Lyon sacked 2 years ago - football genius is me!

Look again it's the Flash!!

Yeah, a fair assessment there.

I'd also like to see McEvoy in because Kruezer is a mobile ruckman.

no one wants stanley to come on more than me, but i'd have to say on sunday's form that tommy walsh looks more ready for senior football. for one thing, his body is ready.

What's with the incorrect spelling of player's names.

Pattison not Pattinson or Patterson ( from another thread)

Riewoldt (from another thread) not Reiwoldt

Koschitzke ( from a million threads) not all the other variations.

You're right Milan, we'd be better off swapping for North's list! :P

Well the simple answer is that he's not untried.

It seems to me that RL mentioned three possible forward inclusions ie McEvoy, Pattison & Stanley. The Age then talks up Stanley as the player "St Kilda supporters have been crying out for since his encouraging pre-season games."

Given Stanley's name was mentioned as a possible they then decide to go with the headline "Lyon may turn to untried tall for a boost" - meaning "Lyon may turn to Stanley for a boost".
