Worse one sided umpiring ever
Worse umpiring i have ever seen in just on 60 years of following the Saints. One free kick for the whole third quarter to us. Free kick in front of goal to them for around the neck when replays showed he was grabbed around the waist and that handball through the points in the last quarter not being paid was just plain cheating. I am not surprised about our defeat because any team that keeps Dawson, King and Clarke getting regular games must
expect to have trouble without our captain in many games from now on.
It would be nice if we kept at least 3 of our players on our forward line at all times instead of going so defensive so early in a game. Gardiner tried hard all night but ran out of legs, it's time to try a young ruckman to help him out. Umpiring aside we were terrible with our ball skills so often kicking straight to an opponent and really we didn't deserve to win.

The umpiring in the 2006 game against Port at AAMI was much more one-sided.
What irked me tonight was how many obvious frees weren't played (mainly to us, and a couple to them too).
The 15 metre rule was bizarrely interpreted.

Umpires made mistakes but Saints made more and would have lost even with a positive free kick count.
Port just played better, with more effort, more run and despite having no stand out forward just ground out the win just like we normally would expect.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

I know I was only watching the televison, so I'm going to ask for the opinion of anyone who had the misfortune to be sitting at Vretin Park last night.
Was it as bad from where you were at the ground?
Yes, to those who said the team did play badly but where was the Saints players rewards for tackling a player who then went into the 360 degree spin and wasn't called or the over the shoulder to Lenny at one stage.
It was strange to hear within the first three quarters only "Free kick to
St Kilda for........" and that was in the third quater, and it was only then I realised that "hang on, when have we had any other calls for a free to us, other than those out on the full for Port"
It was bizarre and once again I go back to the SA 15 metre rule for a mark and the Victorian 15 metre rule that wasn't paid.

I though it was of the usual standard afforded at AAMI - I mean you really have to be 10% better to get a win interstate in most cases.ozrulestrace wrote:I know I was only watching the televison, so I'm going to ask for the opinion of anyone who had the misfortune to be sitting at Vretin Park last night.

The only real shockers were the Glibert-high tackle-free in the last q which lead to a goal and the Josh Carr deliberate handball through the point post in the last 2 minutes. The Josh Carr free was as bad as I've seen - if they're not going to pay that as a free then why in the hell do we have the rule?

What about the laughable decision to pay Schultz a mark, at the top of the goalsquare, late in the game, when the kick seriously went about 8m? Considering some of the 20m passes of ours that weren't paid for the night, that was an absolute joke. And the high kick that Rodan marked earlier in the game also went a shorter distance than about 3 of ours that weren't paid. He also kicked a goal from that mark. So that was 3 of their goals that were gift wrapped, by those in yellow, or whatever colour they were in.
We were very poor and NEGATIVE, though and they wanted it more, so we didn't "deserve" to win. One awful game to watch. What a horrible way to spend a perfectly good Saturday night!
