2010 Sandringham Wrap
Last year I did an ongoing thread about what was happening at Sandy, from the point-of-view of freely available stats. (http://www.saintsational.com/forum/view ... p?p=742133)
Most of us don't get down to games so I reckon it's pretty useful to be able to see at a glance who's been playing in the ressies and who's been named best. Yes, I agree that the listed best are not always completely reliable, but overall it's still an OK guide, and it's the best I have without going down there every weekend!
(Also copying across saintbrat's Leader Newspapers votes.)
Current Leaderboard (after VFL Round 18, AFL Round 21)
(6 votes for named best down to 1 vote for sixth named best each week.)

Will Johnson is a genuine pressure on Zac Attack; and
Jack Steven is a genuine pressure on Andrew Mcqualter.
I said at the start of the year that Sandy would be a serious top 4 contender this year and most people told me I was dreaming. Even those who know more about Sandy and watch them more than me. But my argument was - injuries aside - we have a few slightly mature guys who would almost certainly be playing senior footy at other clubs playing for Sandy this year. I'm referring to Eddy, Mac, Stanley, Heyne, A smith, Steven, Will Johson, Simpkin, Lynch etc. A bit of talent down there. And all around the 20 year old bracket. So not babies.

Geez I think back a decade and a player'd get hurt and I'd think 'Jesus, all we've got is Tony Delaney to play on so and so.'
How things have changed.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Great thread, hope it keeps going...
Can't wait to see Steven in the side, I expect he will be there within three weeks.
Can anybody tell me a bit about Magner?
Age/ Position etc.
This year more than ever it's important to keep an eye out for the 20-21 year olds that have been overlooked in the past.

there's an article on magner here:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/m ... 5849579795
doesn't give exact stats but it says he's a tough in-and-under midfielder, and a big possession winner. pure speculation says he's probably about 183cm/89kg? but could obviously be a touch taller or lighter.
vfl players to watch, from the sandy match report:
michael lourey
jonno nash
kallen geary
james magner
chris irving
and also important to notice that the howard who kicked three goals is brad howard who used to be on our list... must be almost fifty vfl games for him, good to see him staying down here, seeing as he was a queenslander originally.

Why would anyone want to return to Queensland when they can be close to St Kilda.bergholt wrote: and also important to notice that the howard who kicked three goals is brad howard who used to be on our list... must be almost fifty vfl games for him, good to see him staying down here, seeing as he was a queenslander originally.

things that might go against him is his disposal and speed. But works hard, reads the play well and was a shinning light in a slow midfield today for the zebs. Beware of best players lists because they don't always rng true when you actually watch the gamesaintbrat wrote:he was up and about today--plenty of ball in a scrappy game-zebraman wrote:Keep an eye on Chris Irving re being rookied...so far...so good

j smith is jesse smith. first game since the two vfl reserves games he played in the middle of last year. from all reports he wasn't bad, though i've read that he only played 10-15 minutes a quarter. if he pulled up well then it's a great sign for the saints...sainta wrote:If J Smith is Jesse Smith how did he go in his first game for however long it has been?
