Who will really come into their own this year?

Post: # 895908Post battye »

Most years one (or hopefully more) really steps up, I think it was Clint Jones in 2009 and hopefully he becomes an even better player this year.

But who else will take the next step?

Gwilt? Armitage? Brownlow medal smokey Rhys Stanley?

im going with gwilt..going to take over the 'quarter back' role from bj and allow him to play upfield... i can just see it gwilt from the backline spears a 60m kick to goddard who then turns around and hits roo lace out 30 infront 8-)

I must admit it would be a fairytale story if Gwilt elevated himself to star status. He's showing promising signs.

I once spent a year in Adelaide, I think it was on a Sunday.

McEvoy will be the one, looks fit, confident and ready to go. Will become a true following big man who can clunk a mark and kick truely when needed. David Hille like.

Top 20 in the B&F and a best 22 player by years end.

IMO

Maybe this year?

Yes,,,but I would be content if he can just become a good solid first 22 player this year.

ah s***, those lines were meant to be the other way around, sorry

it was meant to read:

mcevoy armo stanley and stevens

nah, surely after sooooo many chances it has to be raph - no sarcasm involved - bloody copy and paste... as i believe if he stands up and plays like he did in the 2008 semi final against the pies, he could step up and become our runner off the half backline, and allow us to push gram further down the field

suppose that is what happens when u watch the last quarter of the 09 grand final late at night, how about u read the last post on that thread that i wrote

also, u took that way out of context, i was saying in the other thread why i consider him to not be in our best 22

in this one, its clearly labeled who do we want to step up, and i say raph as he can be a good player, but i never said he was in our best 22

The bloke that I would like to step up sits in our forward line and has become our example of determination and hard work - but I think has has more to offer, Mini.

He comes highly rated by the experts as being a very smart footballer that thinks his way through a game with excellent skills, great evasion, very accountable as shown in his work to hold the ball in the forward line. Consistently pops up for a goal each week almost on Q.

I wanna see Mini's X factor and I'm sure it's there. He almost never does anything wrong but that only leaves with more of a suspicion that there is more lurking beneath the surface. He follows the gameplan to a T.

He can do the sublime but rarely shows it - it's like he follows instruction so well you want him to have a brain fade and do something so outrageously good that we are left gobsmacked.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

I think I know what you are getting at...but I personally rate Mini's 2009 year highly. Mini was the epitome of the St Kilda Way.

Lyon asked him to to do a lot of the hard work in the forward line which helped to set us up, or held the ball in.

He was also our most reliable kick on goal (apart from one glaring kicki in the GF).

I think Clint Jones will further enhance his reputation as an elite player similar to Cameron Ling.

I really think this year will be Ben McEvoy's coming of age.

On traditionally unreliable evidence (NAB cup form)-

Gwilt- really good signs running from the back line clean possessions, cool under pressure and good at gathering the loose ball.

Armo- looks like he has the stamina to play a full season and with Lenny to come back and help take the pressure off when its not going well should take his opportunities and make the most of them.

Mc evoy- good mark straight kicking forward just needs to keep developing his ruck technique and could be a real dominant player. I expect him to be number 2 ruck by season end.

Geary- looks fitter and hopefully wont have a late season fade out this season.

Jones- Top game where he gathered about 40 possessions and looked to take the initiative and not just play as a tagger.

A.Smith- looks like a player and should get a couple of games this season if we are struggling with injuries.

And on no evidence but assumed development- jack Steven and Rob Eddy

The other way to take this question is who of our established 22 will get better?

Roo...has had his first complete pre-season just about ever. Is the fittest and strongest he has ever been and the GF loss is providing huge motivation for him. I expect Roo to have his best ever year and will amongst other things give the Brownlow a shake.

Dal.. already an exceptional player. But in 2010 I expect him to stamp himself as one of the current games truly great players. Under Lyon he has really gown to now do all the little things and defensive play where he used to be a bit lazy. Like Roo could give the Brownlow a shake.

BJ...I expect 2010 to be a year where he too enters the upper echelons of current day players.

CJ..just seems to improve each and every year. His kicking still looks very awkward but in the NAB he seemed to always hit targets, and good targets at that.

-----------------------------------------

and then there is the player that you would really want to take the next step=

Kosi... If he could just eliminate his bad games, and bad quarters to become more consistent, that would be taking the next step.
If he could deliver more consistently his better football...well that would be more a few steps!!!

I'd go as far as saying he'll be number 1 ruck by season end.

All of the young players should improve by natural development and gaining further experience.
Of the experienced players who can step up? We all want Kosi to do better this year, but it would be great if players like Jimmy Gwilt, Raph Clarke, Brendan Goddard, could all go to another level, and Nick Dal Santo return to the form that had him 3rd in the Brownlow behind Cousins and Kerr.
