Will Johnson Round 1
What is the % chance of WJ making a surprise debut in Round 1?
Im tipping hes 50/50.
Name: Will Johnson
Number 38
Height 191cm
Weight 91kg
DOB 26-10-1989
Debut Yet to Debut
So changes from GF team IMHO:
Out: Ball, Fisher, Clarke, Dempster,
In: Armitage, Johnson, Gwilt, [1 of Smith/Peake/Geary]

I think Miles is closer...but would be surprised to see either. Even though our backup backline players may be a bit underdone (Dempster not sighted, Raph injured), I think a bit of rejigging to the line-up will do the trick.
It's a nice theory though, I'm all for getting a few kids in there, but not sure if R1 is the time to do it (imagine the wailing on here if we get off to start like 2007 and played kids!).

I'd say that Gaetner would be closer to getting a game than Johnson, sure salary issues might prevent him getting a game and that would be a real shame, but at this stage I don't think Johnson has shown enough to indicate that he is worthy of a game yet.
I also don't think that Johnson is the sort of player you bring in for Sam Fisher.
Fisher's strengths aren't pshycial nor are they his ability to shutdown a key forward, it is his reading of the play and ability to create attack from defence, Miles should be next in line IMO...

Also, bare in mind the opposition Congo...Sydney will have big guys like White and Goodes (possibly Curry) up there, who we can cover, but a fleet of smaller dudes like O'Keefe (if you can call him small), Jetta, Rohan, McGlynn, Beven (?), maybe Dennis-Lane flying in to kick goals...Will isn't going to match up with them.

I agree with all that accept gaetner is not on the list. But Miles probably comes in for Fisher on like for like basis. I still think we are one shut down player short... Cats have 3 or 4 shut down specialists in the backline. You spill the ball and you other backs and mids come and clear it... Thats why i reckon WJ is a chance to see game time sooner rather than later.Armoooo wrote:I'd say that Gaetner would be closer to getting a game than Johnson, sure salary issues might prevent him getting a game and that would be a real shame, but at this stage I don't think Johnson has shown enough to indicate that he is worthy of a game yet.

I agree with this
we should play our best 22 players, none of these guys are our 'best 22'
If need be, we can play Goddard in defence like he has.
We still have, Gilbo, Dawson, Baker, Blake, Goddard, and a HBF (Gram, Dal)
We still have a few options up our sleeves before we have to rely on any of those players. I think if we have to play Miles for many games we have certainly gone backwards, i hope he proves me wrong but doesnt man up well enough for me

Gaertner is still a rookie so would have to be upgraded for a player on the long term injury list to be able to play. I guess Jesse Smith would be the only one who could qualify for that at the moment. And even then, I think he may be further advanced that they might not want to lose him for 8 weeks by doing that.
Gaertner does look a prospect from what we've seen, so hopefully he continues to develop this year at Sandy and might get a game if the chance arises.

Do you think there will be any surprises in the Rnd 1 team? Or what we all generally expect?
IE, this:
Baker Dawson Ray
Dempster Blake Gilbert
Joey Armo Gram
Schneider Roo Goddard
Mini Kosi Milne
McEvoy Jones Dal
Gwilt Peake King Geary
Assuming Gardy(King)/Raph/Hayes(Geary) not getting up.

Dempster was in a moon boot at the family day on Sunday and hasn't played since the Sydney game from memory, so can't see him playing round 1 unless his issue was very minor and the moonboot was maybe for protection. But when I saw him, he didn't look very comfortable.Quixote wrote:About a weeks time and we should know.plugger66 wrote:I would have Johnson ahead of Miles. I cannot see what Miles provides at all. Yep, will be interesting to see if Raph plays at Sandy this weekend. Can't see him playing round one with no match practice, so hopefully he is fit enough to play this week.Quixote wrote:Didn't know that. Cool.
Add Raph or Miles for Sean you'd think.

Not a stinker, but he did kick it out on the full to the same spot 3 or 4 times, from the kick in, in the third quarter.Con Gorozidis wrote:he had a stinker?Bernard Shakey wrote:He'd want to show a lot more than he did at Sandy against Box Hill last Saturday.
I think he's the type of player that you don't notice until he stuffs up.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell
He was like that at training, I just can't remember him...must make an effort next time.Bernard Shakey wrote:Not a stinker, but he did kick it out on the full to the same spot 3 or 4 times, from the kick in, in the third quarter.Con Gorozidis wrote:he had a stinker?Bernard Shakey wrote:He'd want to show a lot more than he did at Sandy against Box Hill last Saturday.

Think you will be OK, Geary looked set for senior selection to me, solid Nab cup, kicked goals, ran hard. Think he will play forward in the Gwilt, Eddy role and push up the ground.Burkey 1 wrote:I will be dirty if Geary doesn't play, he is a tough in and under player and we will need this type especially against the swans.
Maybe this year?
