Who can play Fisher's role?

Guys. Injuries are a fact of life in football. Thankfully Gwilt has shown what I think is career best form and poise across half back in preseason and I reckon he now has a chance to put that good form to extended work. Raph will be back. Dawson will lift.
Then there's Gaertner or Miles to think about. Last year these blokes didn't get chances at all.
Our first few games are NOT against terrifyingly capable forward structures, so we have a good opportunity to get some really RESPONSIBLE game time into blokes who simply MUST perform. No better way to extract performance than under pressure.
It's bad luck for Fisher, but a blessing in a way. Blokes get the chance to lift in his place and that can only be a good thing.
FAITH in the human condition, people. PLAYERS WILL LIFT.

Well said Thinline. I seem to remember Sam Fisher getting his extended chance when Maguire went down a few years ago, and he hasn't look back since.Thinline wrote:way to extract performance than under pressure.

Who could replace Sam F?
Gwilt was presumably playing at HB to cover Raph. So, if Raph does come back fit for Rd 1, a direct replacement would seem to boil down to a choice out of Gwilt, Miles, and - if he is fit -Dempster.
I can't see that Gaertner is contender: his height puts him more in the FB sort of role than as a replacement for Sam F.
Leigh Fisher is a roughie I guess, but I think he's further down the queue than the other three.
Height wise, Dempster gets the nod: officially he is the same height as Sam Fisher, although he certainly doesn't play as tall as the 192 cm he is supposed to be.
Miles is basically a small, while Gwilt is somewhere in between Miles and Sam Fisher/Dempster.
Cleary Gwilt (who, like Sam Fisher, is officially 92 kg) is far and away the most imposing physical presence of the three contenders. He is easily the best kick (with his preferred foot: I can't remember seeing him kick with his wrong foot) of the three as well: probably a better and more accurate kick with his preferred foot than Sam Fisher.
Of course, there is a different idea altogether - and one which we might well go with - which involves playing BJ down back and bringing someone like Geary into the midfield.
Any of Gwilt, Dempster or Geary would be good selections for Rd 1 IMO. The only one I'd worry about is Miles. On the evidence I've seen so far, his disposal skills by foot are of similar quality to those of Robert Eddy: lots of vertical height and not much speed.
Miles has clearly got some potential as a backline tagger: to the limited extent I remember him doing anything at all it was shutting down a couple of attacking moves from our oppontents. On one occasion on Saturday he worked his way in front of an opponent and intercepted a pass: a piece of work that drew glowing and exaggerated praise from Robert Walls (which to my mind indicates that Ross has told Walls that Miles is a player to watch: Walls was alone among all AFL commentators in being similarly effusive about Eddy last season).
But I guess, unlike Ross, my bias is towards players like Gwilt who try to get hold of the ball and try to dispose of it to advantage, rather than spend their entire time worrying about their opponents. Which is probably why he's a successful coach and I'm just a spectator!!

MB I think Gwilt has done enough to take Raph's place (who is not fit) and that Raph wil have to eran it back via Sandy.
For height in the backline against the Swans, Zac, Blake, Gilbert....
Maybe after that Lyon will want a tallish player like Dempster who can also play small...but may plump for Geary instead.

However, I don't agree that Gwilt has done enought to snatch Raph's spot off him. If Raph is fit, he ought to be selected for Rd 1 IMO. Whether it is Geary or Gwilt who would then come next on the pecking order would be a close contest.

ANZ stadium is a long, but reasonably skinny ground (similar to Skilled Stadium) IIRC.
On a ground like that you will need multiple "Running Backs" in the 190cm range. We have BJ, Gilbo, Blakey, Gwilty & possibly Raph (We'll know more on Raph after Sandi's praccy match), with Joey, Farren, Gears, Grammy & Dal attacking from Half Back at times. And we will probably need that many. Zac will be the "Stay at Home" Full Back, with Bakes filling the traditional Back Pocket role !!

I think Eastern's got the right of it for rd 1 (and generally subsequently, but the bigger the ground, the more you need your "general").
Interesting group of names that gets thrown out... keeping in mind that we're talking about replacing offense as well as defense. Will not be Blake. Dempster might have it in him, but haven't ever seen him in that kind of role. Raph's not fit. Big call for Gwilt.
How about Gilbert? Worries me sometimes when he rushes his kicks, but has the size to play the defense, and has the wheels to do damage running.
Lyon seems to like Geary running out of defense, and Goddard's got form as a sweeper/QB/insert-another-sport's-position-to-make-a-traditionalist-go-crazy type.
