Round 1 Team

Post: # 888630Post Moorabbin Saints »

After watching todays game the boys look ready for round 1. Probably looking at a team like this:

Back: Blake(/Miles if injured), Dawson, Raph
Half Back: Gilbert, Fisher, Gram
Centre: Ray, Hayes(/Geary if injured), Montagna
Half Forward: Schneider, Riewoldt, Goddard
Forward: Milne, Kosi, McEvoy
Ruck: Gardiner, Jones, Dal Santo
Interchange: Gwilt, Armitage, King, McQualter
Emg: Peake, Miles, Geary

My god thats a good team.

McEvoy has shown his worth and could be used effectively as a 3rd ruck and 3rd tall forward. Gwilt, Peake and Geary are all close but Gwilt has been exceptional tonight. Stanley good but still a bit raw.

Not bad but Ralp would be very doubtful and no way are King, Gardiner and ben playing in the same side.

Agree only two of those three will play. And Kosi is already an extra ruck if required.

With Raph, anyone know how his injury is. Can't see him playing round 1 unless he plays next week. He would be ahead of a few others in our best 22, but only if fully fit which he isn't at the moment

I think at this stage, it would be more like:

B: Blake (Miles if injured) Dawson Baker
HB: Gilbert Fisher Gwilt
C: Ray Hayes (Armo if injured) Gram
HF: Schneider Riewoldt Dal Santo
F: Milne Kosi Goddard
R: Gardiner (King if injured) Joey CJ
INT: Armo, McEvoy, Geary, Ray
Emerg: Peake, Miles, Stanley

Goddard gives an option of the third tall and a key component of the midfield rotation. Very good team.

Only you've named ray in the team and on the bench

Since we haven't seen Gardy yet, you would have to assume that Kingy & Ben will be our rucks come round 1.

I'm loving Ben's development this pre season, his hands are so clean & his ruckwork has improved out of sight. He's also very adept at finding space & being a link in the midfield.

I'm not sold on Miles yet... he seems a very old fashioned no frills footballer but I'm not sure he's ahead of Gwilt if Blake is out.

From the GF side-

Out- Judas, Raph, Gardy, (Blake)
In - Armo, Geary, Big Ben, (Gwilt)

As I posted last week I wouldn't rule out Raph yet. He was interviewed during the Round 2 NAB Cup game and mentioned that he was a couple of weeks away but hoped to play in the last 2 praccy matches "then Ross will pick him".

I'm not sure what that means however it seems RL is a big supporter of Raph and it wouldn't surprise me to see him line up in Rd1 if he can prove his fitness.

Ray named twice. Peake to the bench you'd reckon (lucky as, he's done nuthin). Ray starts. Even without the mighty Leonard that's an exceptional side.

FB Blake Dawson Baker
HB Gilbert Fisher Gwilt
C Gram Hayes Montagna
HF Schneider Reiwoldt Goddard
FF Milne Kosi McQualter
R McEvoy Jones DalSanto
B Ray King Geary Armitage

Could all change if Raph Dempster or Gardiner play next week and if Hayes or Blake are injured for round 1.

Maybe this year?

Like it Spinner, think I would have Blake for Dempster though. Also dont be surprised if McEvoy goes passed one of the senior ruckmen this year, dont know which one but I think he will displace one. Agree on Geary, looks ready to be a senior player this year.

If everyone is fit and available this would be my team....

B: Baker Dawson Blake
CB: Gilbert Fisher Gwilt
C: Gram Hayes Montagna
HF: Schneider Riewoldt Goddard
FF: Milne Koschitzke McQualter
R: Gardiner Jones Dal Santo

Int: Armitage McEvoy Geary Ray

Emg: in order Clarke King Dempster Peake Miles Steven Stanley Lynch Heyne

However if hayes and blake dont pull up then i would add in dempster and either steven or clarke

I'm basically right there with you on all that, except I reckon we've seen just about enough of Dempster. I'd rather see them give Tom Lynch a go, especially if they were planning to play Dempster across half forward again.
Lynch looks the goods, as you would hope, for someone taken in the first round of a good draft. He seems to be able to give who he's playing on the slip and clearly has a good "football brain".

Question: Anyone think that Ray isnt such a lock in our best 22 anymore?

I'd appreciate thoughts.

And from what ive seen - I dont think Peake is anywhere near it at the moment.....

Think both will certainly play round one. Ray deserves to but I dont really think Peake does. I think they are important to our structure though and that is the most important thing at the saints.

Ray probably will play, but Peake is not playing Saints Footy and I would be surprised if he gets a guernsey in round one.

I doubt very much that Gardiner will play in round one, he is a guy that needs some hitouts and on the big
ANZ stadium would be found out.

The same with Lenny, unfortunately the old man injury the calf, could be quite a few weeks and no way he will be risked.

I think Ray is still good to go, he still has that touch of class and plays as a tall mid.

I notice that most posters have McQualter starting on the ground and Geary on the bench, I personally think Geary has gone past McQualter now.
