Good Friday Football In Melbourne This Year.....

Post: # 887832Post St Fidelius »

It's not AFL but NRL and it's Melbourne Storm V St George at Etihad Stadium 2pm start.

One would bet that the AFL would be interested if it is successful (I am tipping it will be) and it may influence their decision in future years.

Would only agree to Good Friday sport if all persons donated their employment and all proceeds go to the Good Friday Appeal.

Just on the Good Friday Appeal (Channel 7) they used to hold (daytime) at Etihad Stadium, (been there a couple of times), but this year it looks like that has gone.

I'm pretty sure they know that Good Friday footy would be successful, they just dont want to do it yet but it will eventually come.

When they realise more than half the population don't even practise religion anymore, and we don't dwell in the stoneages. Completely stupid not to play on this day. Perfect opportunity for the Saints to play the Demons every year.

Yes, one must come to terms with it.

I posted this because there seemed to be little in the press about it (or maybe I just didn't notice)

But IMO this game should be huge and a very strong indication of what sport fans want in Melbourne.

I feel that the NRL have a winner and maybe (on a marketing sense) they should have done this a while back. It will really put the AFL into thinking more about it, because it is promoting another code of football that will get fans attention.

To be honest I dont think the AFL will worry to much about the attention the NRL get for the game. They arent competition to the AFL. They will only get 20k at the max anyway.

I tend to think there will be more the 20k...

and I tend to think they will be interested in the attendance to see just what AFL fans in Melbourne want when you have a venue that holds around 100K

AND most religious institutions, milk, rort, extort any which way they can to lighten your pockets on their behalf, without a hint of human decency!

As if reciting the Lord's prayer and a few Hail Mary's excuses them from being real human beings and not pre programmed, brain wiped robots!

AND what's the gig with Christianity, the belief/opinion that animals have no soul, only human beings are worthy of a soul!

So should anyone before taking their dog for a walk be best advised to keep some 6A+ batteries handy, you know just in case, the dog runs out and the charger isn't available?

Anyone who takes the chapter of Genesis as a literal interpretation, or the whole bible for that matter, needs counseling!

Don't give me this, good friday is sacrilegious garbage!

Personally, I'd play all 8 games on the Friday!

It's just another day for goodness sake.

Lets play some good wholesome sport. The yanks even play football on Christmas Day, and they're much more overtly religious than we are.

The good Friday appeal is nothing more than an eight hour ad for channel 7 anyway, I'm sure they'd love to fill a couple of hours of it with Bruce and his merry men.

of course it's sacrilegious ffs but it's also about respecting others beliefs...and good manners.........what about the players who don't want to be playing football at 3pm on good friday afternoon.....and those supporters who still believe in what the man stood for......i for one wouldn't be going......

those that do not want good fri footy are away with the faries or hypocrites

when they wake in the morning they turn on the lights(people working to provide that service)
jump under the shower(workers providing that service)
turn on the radio (once again someones working)
hop in their car & drive to church & are in need of petrol (drop into a servo, once again someones working)
on the way to church have a crash ...towtrucks & cops arrive & as you get bungled into the ambulance & taken to hospital to be looked after by doctors & nurses just say to yourself thank fk people are working on good fri
beleive it or not footy is a job..no different to those working in other spheres of life

dimwit being a left footer controls what we can & cant watch...once he's gone good fri footy will be the 2nd biggest game of the yr

do i work good fri yes before anyone starts wanking on

not because these business's want to be closed but dictated to by some out dated legislation dating back to by gone days

i'm sure you recall the days of footy on a sat a/noon & deviled be dammed if you thought of playing on a sunday..shock horror footy on a sunday no fn way

what once was is no longer....the day after dimwit goes footy on good fri will be announced

It's a Catholic hangover from Archbishop Mannix.
He held Victorian politicians to ransom for 50 years threatening to direct voters away unless they swallowed his backward agenda.
The Catholics would have us living in the 19th century if they could.

Look , each to their own. I dont actually think either camp has the right to say to the other that they are right and the other wrong.

Id think though that any Club that does consider putting in a submsison to play that day should do a quick straw poll of their members first. Would be embarrsing if for some reason the majority didnt want it and noone turned up lol

Quite apart from the religious aspect of it. Good Friday is now one of the very few days where the majority of people DO have the day off. Yes some will alwyas have to work as there are plenty of 24/7 services that must keep going (I work in one of them)..but..99.9% of retail is closed..and really that only happens twice a year (Easter Sundays not really sacrosanct now) and makes a HUGE difference to who has a day off

So...maybe its a great time for family and friends to get together, not cos its a religious holiday, but because they are all available. Now..if you are a footballing family, great..you can go to a game and I dont have a problem with that at all,,but there are plenty of semi-football families..and maybe for them it would be nice to have that ONE day to do other things, safe that someone wont say "Oh I want to go to the Football"

Just my thoughts..if St Kilda played on Good Friday..Id probably go (but not 100% definately) but Id totally respect those who chose not to

Gee..we spend so much time grizzling about the "Americanisation" of the world, and now we want to use them playing footy on Christmas Day as a reason to play on Good Friday?

TBH I dont think they will get any more people than usual to that Storm game. The novelty attendees will be cancelled out by those who choose or cant go on Good Friday.

Oh..many Clubs request NOT to play on Mothers Day Thats why the Monday night game this year and last is the day after Mothers Day...to take one game from the lowest drawing day of the season...and its not religious

These are your two most valid points IMO.

I would like to see a proper survey on Good Friday footy, not one of the many internet type polls.......the best polls are where the survey group calls up people and canvasses opinion.

Will it be another Mother's Day?

Well, Mother's Day has become a day to spend with Mum/Wife.....perhaps it is now the Good Friday of yesteryear??

Just a thought.....

If you don't want to go because of religious beliefs...

Simple...

Don't go...that is your choice

If you want to go then turn up...that is your choice

No one is forcing anyone to turn up...

I think there would be a very good crowd for a Good Friday game....

It's a matter of choice....at least give us non believers the chance to go to a game

This religious based ban on Good Friday football is just so out dated

Let the fans vote with their feet...or are the churches afraid that the footy crowd will be enormous??

I made this op because I thought it was never mentioned before and also it will be a yard stick on just how well it is received in Melbourne...

And again, I do think that the AFL will be interested in the attendance of this match (for future reference) and anyone who thinks that the AFL would not be interested in this years match attendance really has not a clue IMO.

Sorry for posting it on the main forum, but I feel that this Good Fridays NRL match attendance will have some bearing on any future AFL matches on that day.

Like it or not, one thinks that if it sells well, the AFL will come on board in the near future.
