Archibald Prize artist takes punt on Nick Riewoldt
Among the portraits entered in the 2010 Archibald Prize is one showing the strapping set of pecs of St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt.
In the race to the Archies' deadline, Riewoldt was not the only big man flying. Melbourne artist Pete Ferrier got hold of his subject just four weeks ago, after pre-season training.
"I must say, most women look at the picture and say it's quite a piece of work," Ferrier said. "He is completely and utterly muscle-bound. He could not get any fitter without completely busting out of his skin.

It's got my vote, the subject is pretty special
If you look at the other entries though, there's some pretty good competition...

Now I ain't no artist, and good on the fella for having a crack, but that picture is, well, how should I say this...
Well, frankly, it's sh-t.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Agree. The one of Malthouse is fantastic. Looks like a blown up photo..the detail is amazing. The one of the surgeons is very good too.SainterK wrote:I think the one of Mick Malthouse is pretty amazing, likewise of the surgeons...but I am no expert
As much as I love Nick, that painting is awful. I'm no art critic, but it just looks so amatuer. Could be anyone.

I'm a huge fan of th 'Archies' and attend the exhibition every year. Finally this year, an Artist has decided to capture my favorite subject (St kilda) & player
......And what happens? The 'Artist' who takes on this task, is a hack and makes a complete ballsup of it all!
Sooo disappointed

ill never knock anyones art work as it is more to do with the feeling of painting it then the end product but in all honesty this peice has a very low % of winning .... but good on him for following his passion for his art

True....though I do tend to believe that in modern times that this is overplayed and is used by many with no, or little ability, to justify the title of Artist.st_Trav_ofWA wrote:ill never knock anyones art work as it is more to do with the feeling of painting it then the end product but in all honesty this peice has a very low % of winning .... but good on him for following his passion for his art
When I travel I like to duck into galleries, but at the risk of being labeleda heretic for example on visiting MoMA in New York last November I found a lot of the collection there to be IMO a bit of a farce. Loved the photographic collection though.
I cannot help think that in the future that they will look back upon this last century as a period of Art where talking the talk was more important than walking the talk.
Art does not have to be photo-realistic....but one should at least expect some skill in execution.
