We might actually be fortunate to have given up a first round pick for Watts. If we'd held our ground and Adelaide had accepted a second round pick, we might not have wound up with Sam Gilbert.
On the flipside we've done pretty well trading second round picks. Gram, Dempster and Schneider, Ray and the Heyne pick.

A few Port people I know questioned his application too. Who knows. Watts would have been a champ if it weren't for injuries too.saint66au wrote:Brooks did an ACL playing for Casey and was never the same playerdegruch wrote:Unlucky with both Watts and Lovett...Brooks is the odd one out.saintsRrising wrote:The Curse of Trading First Round Picks...not a happy hunting ground for the Saints.

Re: The Curse of Trading First Round Picks
Sorry but very rich and bold comment to say Watts would have been a champ. Before he broke his lower leg/ankle he had a few senior games and his pace was not up to AFL standard. Servicable at best. He was a pressurized pick for the club at the time because his father Jim was CEO of the club and Fergus was a Saints man through and through. I can understand why they went after him but there were better draft options at the time for us. It's all history now anyway.degruch wrote:A few Port people I know questioned his application too. No, it's not actually. He was rated quite highly at the Crows, I don't believe they were happy to see him go. He had a couple leg/ankle injuries, before that he was a perfect KP forward. Despite having one leg, he did some pretty major goal scoring in regional footy.SuperSaint wrote:Sorry but very rich and bold comment to say Watts would have been a champ.

Re: The Curse of Trading First Round Picks
I respect your thoughts/comments. I too thought more highly of Fergus at first but a few senior games I saw him play in, particularly that season opener against the Eagles in Perth in 2006 really showed up his lack of pace on the lead and especially when the ball was on the ground.degruch wrote:No, it's not actually. On a further note, coach Thomas had lost the support of the President and once best friend Butters at the time and was hellbent on keeping CEO Jim Watts' support. GT was never going to look at anyone else with that first pick as a result of the 'behind the scenes' club politics.
A little history quiz
How many players from the Top 10 draft picks of 2000 are with their original clubs now?
Answer?? Three....Roo, Kosi and Didak
Five (Livingston, McDougall, Angwin, Smith and Pettifer) have been delisted and two(Motlop and McMahon) were traded to other clubs
Of the 5 delistees only one (Pettifer, 113) played more than 50 games.
Inexact science drafting and every club has its good and bad days.

It's a nice story, but...SuperSaint wrote:On a further note, coach Thomas had lost the support of the President and once best friend Butters at the time and was hellbent on keeping CEO Jim Watts' support. After two years of solid development with the Crows and five senior games, Watts went against the advice of his father Jim, then the St Kilda chief executive, and made the decision to come home. Watts senior tried to persuade his son to remain with the Crows and still reportedly bristles at allegations that it was nepotism that took him to the club.

Jim Watts is a very clever man.......what is printed is not always as it seems. He didn't become so wealthy in his business dealings from being predictable.vacuous space wrote:It's a nice story, but...SuperSaint wrote:On a further note, coach Thomas had lost the support of the President and once best friend Butters at the time and was hellbent on keeping CEO Jim Watts' support. Very Good Point. Makes me less concerned about losing our pick 16 for Lovett.saint66au wrote:A little history quiz

Re: The Curse of Trading First Round Picks
I don't think Jim Watts needs his son to lie to Caroline Wilson for the sake of his own reputation. Aside from the odd internet hero, I don't think anybody really believes the trade was nepotism anyway. Gehrig was getting on in years, Kosi was part-time ruck and frequently injured. Watts had just dominated the SANFL finals. The trade made sense at the time. Much more sense than what you're suggesting.SuperSaint wrote:Jim Watts is a very clever man.......what is printed is not always as it seems.

LOL
Spoon fed with rich and abundant sauces I see, sure beats the poisoned cordial and a menu consisting merely of a miserly masticating walnut diet as a main course, not to mention the bed of nails, did the man just take Easter too seriously or what?

I wholeheartedly concur. I was very happy with it at the time, the Crows were not...they thought they'd lost another great white hope.vacuous space wrote:I don't think Jim Watts needs his son to lie to Caroline Wilson for the sake of his own reputation.
