[quote="AFLPA"]AFLPA statement on Andrew Lovett

The AFL Players’ Association (AFLPA) is extremely disappointed at this afternoon’s announcement by the St Kilda Football Club of its decision to summarily terminate the employment of Andrew Lovett.

AFLPA CEO Matthew Finnis said that the grievance procedure which has been progressing for a number of weeks between Andrew Lovett and the St Kilda Football Club should have been permitted to run its full course.

“The AFL and AFLPA have agreed to a grievance resolution procedure which seeks to resolve disputes between players and Clubs in good faith,â€

The AFLPA must be in a real dilemma. Obviously they must stick up for Lovett but just as obviously the Saints players didnt want AL at the club. They are really in a no win situation.

its a rare occasion but i agree with you Plugger66 the AFLPA are in a no win situation with this one .. either way they are going to cause a rift with thier members either Lovett for doing nothing or the rest of the St Kilda (and even other clubs aswell) for fighting it ...

They have to defend the player. That is what they are there for.

Surely you also hope the Saints win the flag?

It all falls down to the wording of the standard player contract I spose.

If it allows the contract to be terminated for "bringing the Club into disrepute" I dont see how the AFLPA can argue that a rape charge is anything but.

Whether he's convicted of it is irrelevant..the charge itself is enough.

Oh and speaking of the AFLPA's duty to look after the players, what about the rest of our playing group? What if a player charged with the rape of a team-mates gf (or even ex-gf) is suddenly injected back into their work-place? This isnt just any old workplace either. Its a group of guys with a bond very few can emulate. What are their rights with the AFLPA?

No win for AFLPA but they'd have to stick with Lovett on this one.

It's a curious decision by the Saints from a legal perspective.

have a look at the video on the other thread......levin said that he was damaging the brand and it was only going to get worse......wouldn't want a saints player appearing in court on a serious charge .....

I thought that would be the case too, but they seem to have covered themselves quite thoroughly from legal action, or so it would seem. In the statement released by the club it mentioned the obvious 'bringing the club into disrepute', but also AL's inability to meet his training schedule and stick to the club's behaviour code. It would seem to confirm the Big Footy thread about AL hitting the town and partying hard in Lorne a few weeks back.

Seems AFLPA would be fighting a losing battle here. If the AFL de-registers him, do they have to support him?

This is a test of AFL rules. The AFL have indemnified St Kilda for all costs involved in the sacking.

Noises made by Anderson this arvo on ABC 774 indicate the AFL will be backing the Saints.

I'm sure the club have sought and received their support before acting.
