Well wouldn't you know it! There are people interested in that game and interested in discussing it. Isn't a forum a great thing? Gives all or any Saints supporter the opportunity to express their own opinion and enjoy Saints memories, whether others agree or disagree.

I taped it and watched it last night .It was still cruel to see the loss ( and I thought Ablett snr had taken out Grant as well as Burke, but that wasn't so clear form the replay ) but gee it was great seeing Plugger , Winmar , McAdam ,Harvey and the rest in their prime. Those blokes had skill and speed to burn , even Plugger , which you tend to forget when you remember the last parts of their career better than the first .
I don't think we were too Ablett conscious since he seemed to be on the bench for just about all the second half.

I don't think I could have faced watching it so soon after the 09 disaster.

My only real memories of that game are
- the sense of pride (even from my "non-premium" vantage point at the back of the top deck) as we ran out for our first final for 17 years
- the sense of outrage at the dirty Geelong tactics (so pleased that they didn't win the flag that year)
- and at the end of the game the utter despair and frustration that we could play so well and walk away with absolutely nothing to show for it.

It was a long drive home in my car which was covered in streamers.

Maybe i was young but it was a cracker - at the game i remember being in Cheer Squad with flag size that would be outlawed today by 3000% and celebrating all the early goals...the sniff of September grass, first finals for decades. Can't bottle Saints supporters expectations> i felt it so much at the 09 grand final - remember peering down from the top deck at the Saints supporters at City End cheering their hearts out surrounded by blue and white. The passion - thats what '91 reminds me of straight away. When i watched the replay and heard Bruce McAvaney saying "its a celebration" as Plugger went crazy....makes the hairs stand up.

1992 final win against the Filth wasn't half bad a memory either.

Or the previous goal he kicked with the snap around the body,Peter McKenna,who worshipped plugger back then... "AWWWW WHAT NOT CAN THIS MAN DO!! He is brilliant!",as the background of the crowd looked like a mosh pit at a Limp Bizkit concert

It has been suggested that we are all insane or masochistic for enjoying the memory of our first final since 1974 because we lost the game.

I bet the legendary Trevor Barker (RIP) would have have enjoyed running out on to the ground for a final. The result would have been irrelevant but just to see him out there in a final...Wow what a moment for him and us.

Some forumites might have even shed a tear.

One of the greatest finals I can remember. Remember watching it at my mates house and being shattered at the loss. Winmar, McAdam tore it up, as did the Big Fella. Watched it again during the footy marathon before the 92 GF, and was rolling drunk by the time I got to the pre-match function (at the tender age of 16). You forget just how good some of those guys were. Would've been nice to see them with a flag to show for it (sound familiar)

It was a brilliant game, but I cried a lot after it. I blame Gary Ablett's elbow. And Russell Morris' grubber pass to Lazar which got Geelong started.

Im confused

First of all, not promoting, just informing.

They say time heals all wounds. 1991 was a lifetime ago and I was just telling people it was on. Some of our younger forumites didn't get the chance to see players like Winmar, Lockett and others of that era play. I have a scar from that game but the wounds have healed and the players don't play for us anymore. By the way, I didn't watch the game on replay either. I just informed people that it was on. The 2009 GF was on Foxtel on Christmas Day but I didn't mention that. I'm not ready to rehash 2009 yet. The wounds are raw and not healed yet and the players are still there and have the ability to atone. It's current and I don't want to see photos of players crying. The scabs are still not healed. I was at both games. And both games are over. No complexity about that. One was nearly 20 years ago so I am over it. One was 3 months ago and we should have won and I am not over it but want to be over it. May in 2027, when they show the replay of the 2009 GF, I will post that on the forum. Got it.

I was at that game and Milan is right on the money. David Grant was absolutely killing Geelong in defence until he was taken out. I still harbour resentment for Geelong over that day. lol

In my opinion, the loss of Grant cost us the game. With a small bench, it was a huge blow... there ere other factors I know, but few people realise just how pivotal David Grant was.

I know players that year still talk today that they felt they were good enough as a team to win the flag that year. I thought they were too.

I totally agree with you. Geelong's dirty play taking out our players won them the game.

david grant was one of the classiest half-backs for time the time i've been supporting the club. rock soild in defense. you'd rarely see a forward kick a bag of goals on him. you could also put him in the forward line, he'd take a strong grab and kick a couple of goals.

gee, '91 and '92 we really had a great team on paper.

We had a terrific side. Was Mick Dwyer in that team as well? I used to sit at Moorabbin in the members stand and this guy behind us spent the whole year bagging David Grant and Mick Dwyer. When they did good things he would say "About time". We put up with it and then in the last home game, my brother got up and told this guy to shut the f**k up. The whole area of people around us got up and cheered. The police came and we thought my brother was going to get in trouble. They actually went to the other guy and told him to shut up too because he would get his head punched in. It was a beautiful moment.
