All depends om your definition of indigenous.
The defunct ATSIC let those with only 6.25% aboriginal blood pretend to be aboriginal.
That's one great-great-grandfather aboriginal and everyone else non aboriginal.

Why would anybody want to pretend to be a member of the most genocide affected race on earth?
Does that help you GO?

indigenous
I would hardly say that Australian Aborigines are the most genocide affected race on earth!
Do you guys know any history from before the Iraq War? Like Julius Caesar massacring Gauls? Or more recently Rwanda? Arm*nians killed by T*rks? What about the little matter of the millions of J%ws killed in WWII?
Have you heard of the potato famine in Ireland? Thousands have been killed in Sudan this decade.
Over 200 000 Australians now identify themselves as "indigenous". That's about double the number estimated to be here when the First Fleet arrived in 1788.

He is a co-host of the Marngrook Footy Show which is on Ch 31 and NITV.Moods wrote:In the late 80's I played with an aboriginal fella named Alan Thorpe. Great bloke Thorpey, but I always felt a bit sorry for him as he was very much an aboriginal in every way, but not everyone recognised it.
Re: indigenous
The genocide of Australian Aboriginals has been going for 220 years so far without any sign of stopping. The examples you quote are conflicts that lasted for less time.I Love Peter Kiel wrote:I would hardly say that Australian Aborigines are the most genocide affected race on earth!

I'm not surprised at your figure of 200,000. With modern medicine, and plentiful food, the natural circumstances that kept the birth rate down have now been totally eliminated. Not sure about your accuracy in Quoting 100,000 when the First Fleet arrived..... It's not as if anyone conducted a census on arrival..... it would be like estimating the number of possums in australia at that time.

indigenous
Many of you have the black armband view of history. There was no state-sponsored systematic genocide of indigenous people in this country. There was displacement, injustice and there were some massacres. There were also massacres of Chinese during the Gold Rush. These were bad things, but they cannot be changed now. The best thing we can do now is treat everyone equally and try to ensure that today's children have access to education and wider employment opportunities.
You can't call it genocide if the population has increased. Surely having plentiful food and modern medicine is a good thing?
Unfortunately we now have remote aboriginal communities like Wadeye where people are paid "sit down money" and there's a huge amount of school-refusal so kids don't learn English. Living in a tribal community may seem romantic to some of you, but you can obviously already speak English and express yourself reasonably well, read newspapers, have access to the internet, have skills that you can use at work, are able to travel and be part of the wider world. many of these kids don't have that choice.

Genocide is bandied about so flagrantly nowdays that it has lost all its meaning.
it like the looney right calling Obama a Nazi/Communist/Socialist, it is just used by people to lazy to look at the history in depth.
Now I am no Ken Shuttleworth fan who tries to deny any massacres or any children forecably removed etc, but genocide???
You second paragraph is exceptional in its incapulation of the issues remote settlements have in "white" Australia. All the kids from there aren't like Liam Jarrah (obviously an exceptional young man).
We still need to improve the rate of infant mortality and life expectancy for aboriginals which are a disgrace for a supposedly first world country, but it is much much harder than it seems.
Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

No wonder they feel entitled to "sit-down money".
