How many Indigenous players do we really have? Peake looks like he could be, Sam Gilbert has the features (and the skill). Does anyone know their family backgrounds?

not peake. his dad was famous for never commenting on his heritage. he frequently resisted calls for any kind of all star games or anything like that. so basically noone knows about peake.
and gilbo. he just loves tanning i think
in the tradition of great saints (think micky roberts, m nettlefold et al)
but remember there have been some funny ones over the years on this topic - people wrongly assumed choco williams to be of some aboriginal descent - it was later learnt he had an ancestor from the west indies.
but the funniest one was kevin sheedy picking daniel kerr in his aboriginal all stars team - daniel is of sri lankan heritage-
so only
winmar
clarkey
lovey
would be indiginous.

Skin colour has bugger all to do with it.
It is a fragile gene in the community, there are quite a few blond haired blue eyed kooris.
It is whether they choose to identify as aboriginals, and given Australia's treatment of its original inhabitants in the past, its not surprising that many do not wish to.

My niece, who is fair skinned, blue eyed and natural blonde has a % of aboriganility that entitles her to special benefits.
However she deliberately chose NOT to take them as she has never lived the culture or felt in any way connected to it.
A blonde haired blue eyed RL player from the 80's and 90's, Alan Toovey (Aussie representative) however did identify with aboriginal culture and actually played in an Aboriginal All stars game.
Aboriginality has nothing to do with skin colour.
Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

Another weird one was Mark Merenda from the Tigers circa 98-02. I think everyone assumed he was aboriginal for his whole career but i think he turned out to be Italian..!Con Gorozidis wrote: but remember there have been some funny ones over the years on this topic - people wrongly assumed choco williams to be of some aboriginal descent - it was later learnt he had an ancestor from the west indies.

Its amazing how many of us have a "touch" which, while being a little un PC is better than what is used be referred to as...borderbarry wrote:If you notice my original post, I was going by Sam G's features, not his colouring.
No disrespect intended to these players, I have always suspected my Mum had a touch, but I have never turned it up on the family tree.
This sort of thing tends not to turn up in family trees

In the late 80's I played with an aboriginal fella named Alan Thorpe. He played about 20 games for Fitzroy and the dogs. Blonde hair, blue eyes and as fair as skin as you're likely to see. He now assists young aboriginal players within the AFL and in other areas. Great bloke Thorpey, but I always felt a bit sorry for him as he was very much an aboriginal in every way, but not everyone recognised it.
