Tom Simpkin
I am not totally on top of the Draft rules. But I am wondering if there is any possiblity that we might only use 5 or 6 of our draft selections and elevate Tom Simpkin to the senior list.
Is this possible under the rules and/or plausible?
I have a feeling it might happen.

ok. As i said i dont know the rules. But given we have such late picks - i cant help think we are better off with Tom Simpkin on the senior list than some 18 year old rookie plucked in the draft at 50+ out of the TAC cup?
Tom will be older/more mature and already has some BOG's at VFL level... He is far more likely to play senior footy in the scenario that one of the 2 Sam's went down?

Simpkin does look good, however, he is just as much use to us on the rookie list (outside the salary cap) as he is on the list, as i would assume there is a very slim chance of him getting a game this year. By upgrading him, we would effectively be giving up a late ND selection for a late rookie selection - so why bother if you do not need to!
And as with Miles, he had to be either upgraded or delisted - the club obviously preferred the former option. Simpkin can have one more year on the rookie list to mature before likely being upgraded next year... No rush needed!

Also isnt there some rule where we are allowed to upgrade a rookie half way through the year so if he impresses we can play him anyway.thirty-seven!? wrote:Simpkin does look good, however, he is just as much use to us on the rookie list (outside the salary cap) as he is on the list, as i would assume there is a very slim chance of him getting a game this year. If the club uses pick 77 on a National Draft player rather than in the Pre-Season draft, they will get a player who will be roughly the 70th player actually taken.
That is because at least 3 picks ahead of 77 will be used to upgrade rookies to senior lists.
3 upgrades are definite and if clubs are gonig to hold over picks for the Pre-Season Draft they will need to start upgrading rooikes earlier - effectively passing ahead of St Kilda's pick 77.
That means the quality of player a pick 77 will be equivalent to around 105 in an uncompromised draft, or rookie pick 20 in a normal year.
Yet that player will be senior listed.
Tom Simpkin has surely moved up from rookie pick 29.
He should be ahead of the national draft pick 77 player (equivalent to rookie pick 20).
However if St Kilda were to use pick 77 to upgrade Simpkin the compensatory player would be about the 150 player taken overall, equivalent to rookie pick 140 in a normal year- but only about half that number of rookies are normally taken.
So instead of getting a player equivalent to an early rookie we get a player who would not normally even be considered for a rookie.
National Draft picks 60 and 64 will also probably be behind Simpkin as well.
Simpkin will remain a rookie but have a lesser qualified player picked to the seniors ahead of him.

Tommy Walsh promotion...
If he looks like being the goods, how do we get Tommy onto the Senior List without any injured players, and without having to wait until mid-season?
Whoops, this was supposed to be a new thread.

He came good in the last part of the season . Was in the best in Seniors last 4 weeks in a row i think. I am sure saintbrat can provide the final Sandy B & F votes and Tom's votes.
here is one example.

According to the VFL website he was in the best 7 times in 15 games at senior level and 3 out of 3 at reserves level. He had two BOGs in the reserves and none in the seniors. He was dropped in July, got a BOG in the reserves, then came back and was in the best five straight weeks for the seniors.
VFL bests should be taken with a grain of salt though.

technically in a pedantic kind of way i guess he is... I played a hell of a lot more in the seniors than at reserve level..plugger66 wrote:Well the quote did say some BOG's and not once was he BOG in the seniors so I suppose he is right with what he says.Con Gorozidis wrote:Happy yet?saint66au wrote:Um...that would be VFL Reserves level I assume? ..I sure didnt see or hear about him dominating any VFL senior games..happy to be proven wrong thoughTom will be older/more mature and already has some BOG's at VFL level
the main point is he played 15 senior games. some of them were good or at least half decent. which puts him well ahead of some on the senior list... so he cant be a million miles away off being the list. im guessing he would be insurance for either of the 2 Sam's at this stage and still improving with age.
he is also ex geelong Falcons - which statistically speaking - means he might make a fair fist of his opportunties...

At St Kilda you would like to see Armitage & Steven ahead of VFL Gallagher
and Lynch ahead of VFL Sautner
If only they had persevered with Howard for another 100 years.
He wasbstarting to show promise with 3 votes for the entire season at Sandringham.

Jarryn Geary was the one player who did very well for the year- only 6 games with Sandy
22 votes in VFL stats- from just 4 games- 2 with no votes
and from those 6 games he got 52 votes in Sandy B&F\
and played 15 games for the Saints.

Well spotted Xander
Begley did exceptionally well getting votes at Sandringham in 2008 seeing he played the entire season up in Queensland for Brisbane.

Great photo, brat! I was looking for those.
Votes per game:
Geary 8.7 (52 votes / 6 games)
Ball 6.5 (26 / 4)
Gram 6.0 (6 / 1)
Armitage 5.5 (77 / 14)
Dempster 4.3 (17 / 4)
Eddy 3.6 (29 / 8)
Steven 2.9 (46 / 16)
Clarke R 2.8 (14 / 5)
Clarke X 1.83 (11 / 6)
Simpkin 1.73 (26 / 15)
Maguire 1.69 (27 / 16)
Lynch 1.68 (32 / 19)
McEvoy 1.60 (16 / 10)
Miles 1.31 (21 / 16)
Fisher L 1.29 (18 / 14)
Gaertner 0.91 (10 / 11)
Smith 0.64 (9 / 14)
Begley 0.53 (8 / 15)
Stanley 0.53 (10 / 19)
Heyne 0.24 (4 / 17)
Howard 0.23 (3 / 13)
Pretty much as expected. Geary seems to have VFL level worked out - now let's just hope he can cement a senior spot this year. Armo also. Interesting to see Simpkin up pretty high on that list. But as previously posted, there's no need to promote him straight away. Good prospect though!

Disappointing to see Heyne's votes per match in Howard territory.
Especially seeing any Labor voters at Sandy would not have given Howard any votes.

However to the first, Howard has been on our list 3 years, and has been playing vfl seniors for 3 years so should be comfortable.
Heyne was a first year player, 18 years of age,
