Armo or Ball

Post: # 840732Post undecided »

Both similar players, both after the one spot in the team. So what one do you choose.

I'd go with armo because he's younger.

Ball.

Armo to get a few games next year to show off his potential, but I think he will be off up north come the end of next season for a top ten draft pick (hopefully).

I think he deserves a game, Armo that is. Has a nice left foot kicks, has shown a lot given his lack of opportunities. In saying that, if he doesn't get a game next year, almost certain to go to goal coast for a pay rise and some game time.

All depends on whether Ball signs the contract.

Armo - provided Bally is used as decent trade bait and somehow we get Fev (although I reckon it's just Kosi for Fev + picks, not involving Bally, unless it's a complex 3-way trade involving another club....)

Armo. He showed what he is capable of this year. We should stick him in the middle and give him so good experience.

Claimed Armo as my man after he shredded Essendon early in 08.

Sticking with him.

can either of these guys run and carry?

can Armo play more than 1 good game. Hows his tank?

Ball stepped up in the GF i thought with limited time and shouldve been used more. Gets kudos for that.

"Armo's" got a cool name to say.....thatsit at present.

While Hamill was an elite player...BJ is an elite player with an entirely different skill set and way of playing.

And while Hamill was an elite forward he was not that flash when played down back or in the midfield.

Whereas BJ can be good all over the ground.

Any player who did not cry after the Grand Final does not deserve a game.

I still think Ross wouldn't have put so much effort into Luke this year, if he was going to trade him. By having him play in the VFL and having his weaknesses broadcast to the footy world, he didn't exactly increase his value in the market....so I am not sure a trade was ever his intention.

I'm really not in a position to have an opinion on Armo, haven't seen him play much...

A second place finish in the B & F from BJ suggests that the top brass think he played pretty darn well in the role(s) he is currently playing.

IMO you lose far too much by playing BJ up at CHF. Take the prelim for instance. Goal assists for two Riewoldt goals. BJ is probably the best passer of a football over 35m of anyone in the AFL. Surely means that he must be played predominantly in the midfield or half back......

No real knowledge, just some conclusions I've come to.

If Ball signs the Saints contract I think we'll attempt to trade Armo.

I get the feeling that the Club has almost 'given up' on him and fully expect to lose him for not much next year to Gold Coast. Therefore if they think they can get better for him now, they will.
I alos think that they may have already told him they are looking to trade him which would explain his 'sour look' at the B&F (a long bow, I know).

They probably feel there is more upside with Steven.

Of course this scenario is dependant on Ball staying.

He would have to play an incredibly good year next year, for us to get a top 10 pick as compensation for losing him. And if he played that well, we wouldn't want to lose him.
This may be one of the issues our match committee are facing. If we traded Ball (and apparently a few clubs are genuinely interested: http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,865 ... 11,00.html), would we just lose Armo at the end of next year anyway, and be left with neither?
If we trade Ball, we'd probably need to be sure Armo agreed to extend his contract beyond next year, before doing so.
The thing is, although we'd probably all love to keep Bally, because he loves the club and is such a great bloke, etc, he will still probably cost us a lot of money. Even though he would be on a lot less than the reported $600,000 he was on this year, he'd still probably be wanting a lot more than someone who plays the sort of role he is now playing (on and off the bench, doing the "grunt work", without too much polish, or run) would usually get. They're usually about the lowest paid of all. He may be wanting more than a few of the guys who finished top 10 in our B&F are getting. He'd also be almost certainly keeping Armo out of the team as well, which is another cost. As I've said before, I don't see a spot for both of them, plus Lenny, in our team at the one time. I don't think match committee do either.
On the other hand, if we trade Bally, he gets to play more game time at another club (for probably more money than we'd pay him), while we free up $600,000 from our salary cap of this year and get something significant in exchange for him. Something/someone that might help us get someone like Fev, or Burgoyne, for instance.
It also of course frees up a spot for Armo, who could probably have at least as much of an impact on games next year, as Bally did this year, although hopefully even more and for less money. It's worth remembering that in probably the only game he played in the middle in the seniors this year, Armo had about 25 possies in 3 quarters or something, and got 3 Brownlow votes. He showed what he can do, when played on the ball, in the seniors. And those that question his "tank" need not worry. No-one's expecting him to play 90% of game time here. Just as long as he plays more than the 50% Bally has been playing, we'll be alright. It would also be nice to get his long kicking and extra run into our team. On the other hand, Bally brings leadership and incredible character, etc, which Armo may not have as much of, so it's a dilemma.

I think Steven also comes into this category - future in and under - so there are a few options but I wouldn't want us to trade much away in this area, perhaps trade for improvement in the same area.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
