How important will the week off be for us?
I didn't see much of the Bulldogs game... I'm guessing from the score line it wasn't a tough encounter. We're there any hard hits that could leave some players sore this week?

Robert Murphy sore right knee late in the last quarter
Will Minson sprained his left big toe in the first quarter
Mitch Hahn Bruised calf and iced up after the match
some sore players but all should be okay to line up on Friday IMO
Don't wait for the light at the end of the tunnel to appear, run down there and light the bloody thing yourself!

Shane Crawford wrote an article on this in the Herald Sun ... basically tipping fairly comfortable Saints and Cats victories, due to the advantages the week off can bring
Enables players to rest up, refreshen but still maintain their work on the training track and prepare the way they need to for the game.
He said it also gives both clubs that extra week to put in regarding tactics/gameplan/approach to the match.
I thought it was interesting from a guy who has been through it recently and knows what to expect. The Hawks were pretty much on top early in the Prelim last year.

The question Ive got is what about the mental side.....as Lyon noted when he said they realised it "takes a bit to get this group going again" after we rested players late season...
Just HAVE to hit the ground running this week - BIG start and really take the sting out of the early. They will come back - they are a good side - but our pressure has to be A1 and we can shut them down.

The week off allows injury niggles to clear up and with normal training the boys should be ready - trust the training staff here.
Bulldogs will be sore but each week is the same during the year.
Mental attitude . Trust the training / coaching staff here its another game .
Conclusion : we should be fresher. Our fitness during the year has been great no final qtr fade outs...
Dogs will be mentally up but possibly a little more weary than us.
Saints hopefully mentally up too , but fresher legs.
Then it comes down to the game its self .... getting a good start , being switched on , settling down early not giving them a break.

Having the week off for a preliminary final, statistically, isn't as important as being the qualifying finalist in the semi final.
Qualifying finalists in Semi Finals under current finals system
2000 NM d Haw, Carl d Bris
2001 Rich d Carl, PA lose to Haw
2002 Adel d Melb, PA d Ess
2003 Bris d Adel, PA d Ess
2004 StK d Syd, Geel d Ess
2005 Adel d PA, Syd d Geel
2006 WCE d WB, Frem d Melb
2007 NM d Haw WCE lose to Coll
2008 WB d Syd, StK d Coll
2009 WB d Bris, Coll d Adel
Record: 18 wins, 2 losses (90%)
Qualifying final winners in Preliminary Finals
2000 Ess d Carl, Melb d NM
2001 Ess d Haw, Bris d Rich
2002 Coll d Adel, Bris d PA
2003 Coll d PA, Syd lose to Bris
2004 PA d StK, Bris d Geel
2005 WCE d Adel, StK lose to Syd
2006 Syd d Frem, Adel lose to WCE
2007 Geel d Coll, PA d NM
2008 Geel d WB, Haw d StK

It should also be noted that all three teams that won a preliminary final without having the week off all won the premiership that year.
