And as a visual aid the AFL could... release balloons?

Banners should go and the anthem should only be played at the Grand Final.

Nobody but the cheer squad (and Before the Game) are intersted in the banners.

As for the national anthem, what a joke.
We were given the choice of Advance Australia Fair, Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia, to vote for back in 1974. The best of a bad lot won, although I would say Waltzing Matilda is a better tune.

I think if you re-read the thread, most would think banners are still a big part of our game.

But thanks for giving our opinions again...

Most, being the half dozen that have said so on this thread?

By all means keep them, they are obviously an integral part of our game.
We will have no hope of winning a premiership if our banner is not better than theirs.

Most, meaning 9 - 2 and one that I'm not sure of whether it was a piss take. Other posts were about the anthem.

So of the small amount of genuine posts, oh including mys support too, makes it 10-2, maybe 10-3, maybe 11-2.

Convincing, nonetheless.

But again, thanks for giving our opinion.

BS by name, ....

By all means, create a poll.

Iceman234 (I see you can count, which is pretty good coming from Melbourne's West) I gave my opinion, which obviously is not your opinion, which obviously is the correct opinion.

I won't reply to any more of your posts, because I would not want to interfere with your ego.

Enjoy the banners and the anthem.

Go Sainters.

Waltzing Matilda is a better tune, but hardly inspiring. I disagree with whoever said it typified the Aussie spirit. Wasn't there a movement some time ago for the "we are one, but we are many" song to be adapted?

BS, both highlighted areas show how little you comprehend about life and people in general.

You just go on believing your own hype.

marksnsparks wrote:Speaking as a Pommy immigrant who grew up with Soccer and rugby league I say keep the banners as they are.

Keep the flags waving after scores.
Keep the piruetting umpires.
Keep the bounce.
Keep the 1 point for a miss.
Keep the sleeveless guernseys.
Keep the club song after the game.
Keep the oval shaped pitch.

Keep the whole bloody lot. It's a beautiful, unique exciting game and be proud of it! Homogenise the code at your peril!

I'm only sorry I only discovered it at the age of 32.

Oh, get rid of the MCG hot dogs. Like sucking a dog terd through an empty toilet roll.
It's a bit sad when a 'pommy immigrant' gets it, and some of us 'home grown' Aussies still have an inferiority complex about ourselves and the best traditions of our game. I always feel really proud when someone who has lived in another country comes here and understands and loves the sport like we do. Always wondered why the rest of the world doesn't 'get it' 8-)

why is that?
after all the players dont even read whats on them. why would it have any impact on their efforts?

most of the cheer squad believe the banners are for the players. so did i until i read what Gilbo said about them. lost a lot of respect for him after that, and do to anyone who has a go at them. i now firmly believe their something for the supporters to read and look forward to on game day, and if the players want to they can read it.
the banners take a lot of time to make, the letters are not just quickly stuck on and we are in and out with in 20 mins. anyone why has been to banner making can tell you that...SainterDad
for a normal game we start rolling out the cloth at about 5.00pm and the banner is not over until at least 8.30-9.00, and as you saw last week a lot more detail goes into the finals banners so they take even longer.

if anyone has any problems with the banners please dont tell the whole world on here. contact the cs president and talk about it with her.

saintdooley, I'm not having a go at the cheer squad, used to be a member myself.

I know the time and effort that goes into the banners each week. Just saying that their relevance to the game in general has probably passed.

Maybe they should be just used for milestones and finals, not every week, including the NAB Cup.

Great idea Milton66.

But I'd go further.

We should replace the banner with some cheerleaders.
The players could run out one by one as they are announced.
With a Hammond organ playing inspiring tunes.

Then we could all stand and sing "God Bless America"
followed by the sponsors song.

so to anyone who is planing on taking out their anger out on us, please dont, or i will search for your network I.P address then with that find out your residential address, and i will enter your house while you are sleeping and make things very hard for you

Just putting it out there dude.

Like the once mighty Chiko roll, the banner is passe IMO.

As far as Waltzing Matilda goes...yep it does represent our spirit...

A song about a guy who steels a sheep and commits suicide?

wow. It's no wonder we worship a dead hoese and hero worship a gangster named Kelly.

Do you honestly think that Australia should have as its national anthem a song about a intinerant petty criminal who committed suicide to avoid justice, sung to a tune that was borrowed from a 17th century love song?

I didn't think so.

Are you asking me Grumpyone? As I said, I don't like Waltzing Matilda at all, and think we have pretty ordinary national songs as a collective. However, I am a major fan of our amazing country, and I'll go along with Australia Fair if needs be...

BTW, anyone able to sing the second verse? I can get as far as "beneath our southern cross we stand" which may not even be correct.....and then I've got nothing
