What was the hit made in the goal square ,,,, play on call ,, and instantly a Saint hit from behind ??

Clearly a set play; Maxwell on Mini was the first of at least half a dozen similar hits. Probably strictly within the rules because the shepherder timed their hit each time just as the umpire called play on.
The AFL indicated they didn't like it in the Dawson case (I don't think he waited for the call).
Expect a rule change next season.
