Re: F*** 1966
Sorry mate, the issue isn't whether '66 has any bearing on 2009. The issue is you can't be cavalier about history and just forget it. History, especially when it turns out well, as it did in 1966, is there to be savored, cherished and above all, respected. Not doing so is a mark of disrespect to blokes like Baldock, Stewart, Cowboy et. al. You don't mean to disrespect them do you?aussierules0k wrote: Forget 66.... just forget it. I wasn't born when we won the flag in 66. But I can tell you, that every time I see any footage or photos relating to that one magical moment in our clubs history, It stirs up the emotion and passion within.
If it does nothing for you at all, I would begin question your passion for this Mighty club.
God I hope I'm here for the next one.

One of the greatest grand finals in VFL/AFL history and such an important part of our beloved history.aussierules0k wrote:I'm sick to death of hearing about 1966.
It was 43 - I repeat 43 years ago.
Forget 66.... just forget it. It was last century!
'66 has no bearing on 2009... seeing as none of the 1966 players are still playing and none of the VFL rules are still active.
2009 is a totally new era with totally new players.
We can sleep well, knowing we have brilliant players on our 2009 list.
Go the Saints of 2009!!!!
It shall never be forgotten!

AOK ...... I suppose you can provide us to a link to some conspiracy theory that shows it was actually Collingwood who won on that glorious day in 1966.
Whatever you come up with to try and pour cold water on history & tradition it's all humbug IMHO. Those that poo hoo or take no note of history & tradition in so many areas IMHO are all the poorer for it. We are social beings that are moulded by our history and traditions.
Cogito ego sum... and luckily I was there at the MCG to experience that wonderful historical occasion........ I only hope those supporters who have not experience such elation are able to experience it this year. You'll never forget it and will always refer back to it as a seminal moment in your lives as a Saints supporter.
So may that victory of last century be something that burns in the hearts of the players of this team, that they also want to create their own history and be the first team of Sainters to add to this successful tradition this century. Build on it boys please.

I'm sure that almost all of us would prefer to reminisce about 1965, 1971, 1991, 1997, 2004 and 2005 as well as 1966. Alas, it never came to pass. But it is quite disrespectful to those, who did wait up to 69 years to see the Saints flag and are now dead, to dismiss it as 'old news'. It will be equally disrespectful to those who have waited another 43 years to see another flag, for someone born this century to describe it as "in the past". It's a pity that you did not attend the Launceston Reunion - I'm sure you would now have a more positive perspective.

Re: F*** 1966
Hope you say the same thing in 2052 but replace 1966 with 2009, because that means we were here to witness this flag!aussierules0k wrote:I'm sick to death of hearing about 1966.

I think your right about what he meant he just needed a little more tact.OLB wrote:When we win our next flag, we won't have to hear about 66 anymore.
66, 66, 66, 66, 66... how nice would it be to have another year to cherish.
I think that was the point of this thread.
At the end of the day even if we win 5 in a row, I still hope we hear about 1966.
