threat to our "comfort zone"?
I've followed St Kilda for long enough to know that there are many Saints supporters who are feeling "threatened" by the current success of the team on field. I feel sympathy and understanding for these people, for it cannot be easy changing the attitudes that have been formed over generations. These supporters have been comfortable (in a perverse way) knowing that we are seen as "underachievers" "perrenial losers" so on and so forth. Its far easier to have low expectations and have everyone else in the AFL "adopt us as a second team" After all, its easier for THEM to have a whipping boy (takes pressure off them) Its far easier to finish mid-ladder, or lower eight...no pressure, no one hunting us, everyone in their patronising and condescending way feeling "sympathy" with us supporters.
Well I'm sick of being comfortably numb!!!!! I have no wish to be popular with ANYONE! We should be brave enough to grasp the challenge and face up to the reality of being in the "hot seat" of flag favouritism and plant our collective butts firmly in that hot seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Time for bravery and courage...get out of the "comfort zone" Sainters and give the AFL competition a shake up in september!!!!!!!!

threat to our "comfort zone"?
there's people who want to pick and choose who we play in finals (like avoiding collingwood first up) to make it easier to win the flag...to them I say "get a bit brave and prepare to play ANYBODY ANYWHERE"!

I like this post - Big improvement from your first.
And I have been trying to shift this very mentality as we have progressed through the season myself. Its not on the surface, but I have found that it is very deep within me.
Great post!

I really cant see why you wouldwantto avoid anyone in the 8, and we should not be afraid of eddiwood, as you say anybody anywhereArthur Mullard wrote:there's people who want to pick and choose who we play in finals (like avoiding collingwood first up) to make it easier to win the flag...to them I say "get a bit brave and prepare to play ANYBODY ANYWHERE"!

'Allo spinner me old chinaplate! cor lumme guvnor!!!!!!!
Thank ya for the positive words much very appreciado!!!
I've felt that nagging feeling too like,,,,when is it going to all go wrong? sort of thing! Too many of us get comfortable by expecting to fail and therefore not getting disappointed.
BE brave enough to expect rewards for a great team effort DONT go into our shell! We are the top of the shop!!!!!! ENJOY!!!!!!

Great post Arthur.I'm afraid I fit the demographic and characteristics of the saint supporter you are talking about and after decades of disappointment it is hard to shake the old mentality
But you are spot on...we need to embrace being the hunted because it means a significant shift in the way we are progressing and being perceived by our competitors...most of all we need to believe in what Ross and Boys are building here...
This year is vastly different to the hopeful ventures of 97, 04-06.There is a strength, discipline and inner belief about this mob that is palpable at games and as much as the Collingwoods of this world like to pretend otherwise they are starting to fear and hate us...
Lets hope this hatred intensifys at the end of september and for a good many years to come ...
Destiny awaits...stare into its eyes
KEEP THE FAITH

Hawks must have been one hit wonders.
They had their chance last year 5 years ahead of schedule and they took it...all power to them.
Lets take our chance

threat to our "comfort zone"?
Hey Arthur! (or is it "Arfur" ) that guy you've named yourself after cracked me up when he did that cover of "you're the one that I want" from grease with Hylda Baker doing the "Olivia Neutron Bomb part!!!!!" (check it out on youtube)
The OP is spot-perfect mate! I remember Rod Butterss saying at the 2003 B & F that he was sick and tired of us being "popular with other supporters" I was sitting there thinking..."Right-on!!"
We played Carlton in 2002 and kicked about seven goals in the first 1/4 then the Blues came back at us and at half-time we were only in front by seventeen points. A guy next to me said, (without a trace of irony) "Well I'd rather be in Carltons position than ours" (I kid you not!!!) I nearly choked on me cheese barm cake and chip butty!!!!!! I replied "how is being three kicks down a better position to us mate?" then I realized...It was years of frustration and disappointment kicking in and this poor backstud was getting prepared for the let down...rather than get wired up for a second half of hard yakka getting behind the team!
We're all Sainters on here, but some of us can get just a WEE bit too conservative at times!
