Note how his chest is in front of his hips when he makes contact with the ball.

When will they teach him how to kick.
He is too good a player not to have this flaw corrected.

Anytime you'd like to point out the credentials you have that allow you to think you can correct the kicking technique of an AFL footballer?

My football career ended at schoolboy level so I feel very qualified to say that Roo looks like a spastic chicken at times when kicking.

ace is right hes missed far too many easy shots in his career his eye sight needs looking into he squints like crazy whilst looking up at the goals as well

The photo shows the ball contacting high on the instep (a shank), which is why it wobbled off to the right. Ideally, the ball should fit snugly into the foot, beginning just above the toe. His body shape - very long legs for his torso - makes head over the ball very difficult without bending the knee at impact, which you also see in the pic. I can remember a little book that I got in the 60s which had stop frame photos of the correct kicking style. I dunno who the nearest player to him was, but perhaps he should have cramped up - then again - he plays the game so fairly, he would never resort to such tactics.

Jimmy Bartel missed a shot for goal the other week and only scored a point. Luckily for him it was enough to win the game. There have been very few right footers who have mastered the shot from that side, at that distance and at that angle - perhaps Plugger, but it was his least favourite shot as well.

I wonder what would happen if Nick kicked with his left with such shots.

I think there's some over-analyising going on here...had Roo taken another 10 seconds to calm down and kick it at his leisure, I reckon he would have nailed it. Of course, we'll never know.

To have got the goal and the win may not have been the best result.

We didnt deserve to win , 2 points was flattering .

If he had kicked the goal it would only have covered up the weaknesses.

Weaknesses in the team effort.

Weakness in Riewoldt's kicking technique that has not been corrected.

Both need to be fixed.

It has got nothing to do with his eyesight and everything to do with his body movement.

He is not balanced, his upper body and head are moving (backwards) at the very time he is trying to impact the ball with his boot.
This technique is why he misses so often.
It has nothing to do with confidence or the yips.

Somone help the guy

He is worth the effort.

he is actually a lovely kick on his left and seems to be a natural kicker hen on the run. but his balance and placing of the ball when kicking from the set shot is so iffy, its a worry

All this analysing is just amazing. I tell you what how about all of you so called experts go out and run about 20km at 3/4 pace, then stand in front of over 40,000 people with 18 blokes standing 10 metres away hurling abuse at you AND then try and kick a footy 45 metres accurately.

i think we need to be mindful that Roo has been playing mostly as a CHF this year and as such his conversion rate from a long way out - 45 metres or 50 metres plus has been excellent.

He's been doing a fantastic job - everyone misses.

Plus did we really deserve to win after being well behind all day and with 3 bombers injured and sitting on the bench in the last quarter?
