observations
the bombers deserved their victory, having comprehensively beaten us for two quarters and piled on the scoreboard pressure to set up a match-winning lead.
- their pace troubled us. cj was sorely missed as was mcqualter.
- a decision is needed on how (and if) we fit all of dawson, max and blake into the same team/backline.
- the monkey is off our back. all the pressures of "needing to drop one" etc are out the window.
- with eight top "ins" a bit of complacency might have crept in. it illustrates just how fine the line is between being at the top of your game and winning and being slightly off and losing.
- the signs were there early on when we buggarised around with the ball a lot in the backline. we need to move it quicker and more directly.

A lot of our players look like they're running through treacle at the moment. Is fatigue setting in?
I've noticed that Sam Fisher has been grinding it out for quite a few weeks now. His early season dash has evaporated. Montagna, Hayes, and Goddard are starting to run up and down on the one spot.
It's a physically demanding style of game we play. Let's hope Dave Misson has got it all under control

Stinger... agree with you about Dawson being off..... but I think he might have been on a bit of a 'let down'... the Hawks game clearly meant a huge amount to him last week..... i'm sure he'll pick up the pieces during the week and be back to his old self

Armitage kicked a couple of goals, but with his inability to cover a lot of ground, he was little help to our other midfielders. He just might be the slowest player on our list. Without the extra hard-running assistance in the midfield, Hayes, Goddard, Dal Santo, and Montagna did it hard.
Ball and Armitage don't seem to fit the Lyon game style, as they struggle to get to the next contest.

It also resulted in a lot of high tackles...plugger66 wrote:My observation is what a few having been saying a while. We are to tall in the backline. Less run than usual because of one to many talls. Any way the loss means nothing but also we were lucky to get so close. Ryder getting injured really helped us as we finally got on top in the midfield.

Totally agree with the OP. I was instinctively upset for 1-2 minutes after Roo's kick missed but afterwards the fact the we lost didn't bother me. The Dons deserved the win and did hammer us for two quarters. It was a great effort to come back from 43 points down in the third term but it would have been a travesty if we had snatched the win after the siren.
We were also way down on intensity. The difference in intensity could be explained by Essendon having their season on the line compared to the Saints essentially playing for nothing but to keep the streak alive. Now that we no longer have to worry about this, we will have considerably less pressure on us come finals, and I (and everyone) would much rather have the saints lose now than in a month's time.

The ball is in Essendon's forward 50.
About to be thrown in.
Where is your opponent Mr Dal Santo.
Yes that's him 40 metres away.
He ran away from you into the clear while you were ball watching.
Lucky for you the ball went out of bounds.
Now he's runnig back to man up on you.
Yes Mr Dal Santo your opponent Jobe Watson was best afield but you didn't notice because you were never watching him.

I am 57, I can't run, jump or ski.
It is caused by arthritis.
Luke Ball is less than half my age, he can't run, jump or kick.
It is caused by osteitis pubis.
The result is the same, we aren't able to participate properly in our favourite sports.

Blake was very poor ... he has been excellent this year, but had no opponent, was caught out of position and fumbled the ball.
Ditto Dawson today.
We have one too many big guys in the backline, and it was glaringly obvious. Ray pushed back to provide some more run.
It was obvious against Carlton and it stood out today again. A hard call has to be made, and one of Dawson, Hudghton or Blake will have to get the flick.

Totally agree but i would think Blake is safe out of those three.Legendary wrote:Blake was very poor ... he has been excellent this year, but had no opponent, was caught out of position and fumbled the ball.

Yes yes and yes!
Anyone else notice we have a rotating backline?
Im fearing someone will get dropped....And my money is on Max (even though I its not my choice.....)
We were slaughtered at the clearances. Jobe Watson tore us a newie as noone has this season
Angus Monfries clearly has a communicable disease, as noone wanted to go near him.
THe only person prepared to take a chance and run until 3/4 time was Grammy..who I thought was our best player and our only 4-quarter contributor. Dal got plenty of it but his defensice game was well below par.
Kosi's aerial work was magnificent considering the knock he got early

Decison had to be correct because the ball was lying on the ground behind Milne's back in full view of myself who was looking over Grun's head.
Milne clearly deserved to be pinged because without the ball he clearly was not trying to get it out.

With Jones, out Ross Lyon chose not to tag Jobe Watson with someone like Dempster.
Instead he allowed Dal Santo to get beaten going the other way.
Dal Santo could be a big liability if he doesn't get tagged in the finals because he has no awareness of his opponent.

Sorry JB it was Round 8 and I think you will find that CJ didn't tag Watson that day rather the reports say he went head to head with Lennyjoffaboy wrote:Watson got 39 posessions in R1 when cj was on him.ace wrote:With Jones, out Ross Lyon chose not to tag Jobe Watson with someone like Dempster.

Fairly sure I remember supporters and some in the media were questioning Lyon's tactics to allow Watson to run free
In Round 8 Watson had 18 contested possessions today he had 15
Maybe next time we will put CJ on him if he is available
