AFL to ponder special honour for Saints; Courtney Walsh | August 15, 2009
Article from: The Australian
SO exceptional has St Kilda been this season, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said yesterday the league would consider commemorating their achievements should the Saints see out the home-and-away season undefeated.
To achieve the feat, St Kilda must beat Essendon tomorrow, the Kangaroos on Sunday week and Melbourne in round 22, hardly a trio of opponents likely to provide major resistance if the Saints continue their ferocious brand of pressure-based football.
Demetriou, clearly, is a fan, though as he proved with Sydney in 2005, not always an excellent judge. He yesterday lauded St Kilda, which is on the verge of becoming the first side since Collingwood in 1929 to clean sweep the preliminaries to September.
"If they do go through unbeaten, it will be an incredible performance and added to it, I think they will have the highest percentage of any team to play through," Demetriou said.
"The amount of points kicked against St Kilda, which is very low this year, is quite extraordinary. It's phenomenal.
"It has not been done in the modern era over 22 rounds. It is extraordinary."
Asked during his regular Friday media call if the league had considered recognising the achievement in some capacity, Demetriou replied: "It is a good suggestion and I'll be taking it up with some of my peers."
Not that it is likely St Kilda's football hierarchy will care should they fall short of ending a premiership drought dating back to 1966.
Coach Ross Lyon and captain Nick Riewoldt have made it clear that while qualifying for the finals is an achievement, satisfaction rests with claiming the club's second premiership.

A few million bucks would make a great recognition, Andy.Asked during his regular Friday media call if the league had considered recognising the achievement in some capacity, Demetriou replied: "It is a good suggestion and I'll be taking it up with some of my peers."
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

You're right, SB, we don't need his pressure.
Do people talk about Geelong winning the minor premiership or Hawthorn?
It's called the minor premiership for a reason.
If we do it, then we can talk about it.
If we do it and don't go on, it might be all we talk about.
As someone said, "That's what I'm talkin bout!" and that's what I want to talk about.
And it hasn't been done yet."It has not been done in the modern era over 22 rounds. It is extraordinary."

I think giving the club enough GF tickets so all members get a chance to see the GF (potentially) would be sweet

We had better get used to these types of articles. It is only going to get worse on the lead up to and during the finals.
It was interesting to listen to Ross during the week say that there were going to be more and more people trying to destabilise the team. They won't read the crap the media put out. Seems the players are smarter than the supporters. I may issue a media ban around the house for the next 6 week so I don't have to read or listen to their buls%@t!
Always remember with the media that todays news is tomorrows toilet paper......
