No real advantage between finishing 1 or 4
After a conversation with a filth supporter at work it occured to me that if we meet Collingwood or the Dogs in the first week of the finals that effectively they get exactly the same advantage as us.
Different if teams 3 and 4 are interstate as 1 and 2 get to play in their home state.Certainly doesn't apply at the MCG against the filth or the doggies.
Makes you wonder whether top 2 or a least top should get a bit more of an advatage.Bloody good effort to get there for nothing more than 4 th in this case.
Hope this means jack squat and we prove we are the best team with a first up win against whoever
Losing the first final would probably mean we would have to beat the cats in a prelim
Whatever...just do it Sainters

Re: No real advantage between finishing 1 or 4
yeah, the system is flawed, i agree. the team that finishes top should get every conceivable advantage after proving they are the best of the season.
however these are the rules that we sign up the play under.
we'll just have to prove again in the finals that we are the best team.

I hear what you are saying, but as it stands we will potentially have 7 more wins than our opponents in Week 1...If thats not the most lop-sided qualifying final W-L record in history I'll go he.
And...it always was and always will be a home STATE advantage....Sydney play their finals at Homebush even though they play far less games there than at the SCG

Certainly opens up the strong argument for carefully rotation and selection designed to maximise the luxury of effectly not needing another win in the home and away.
Not suggesting that we flirt with our form but the sole objective should be to get the best team to the september line in the best condition.
Don't be surprised to see some interesting selections in the next 4 weeks.
Also makes sense to get some more time into players like Geary, Armo,Maguire and possibly a Jack Steven or Miles.
Interesting times no doubt.

7 more wins huh? Id call that a distinct mental advantage! Still not enough though.saint66au wrote:I hear what you are saying, but as it stands we will potentially have 7 more wins than our opponents in Week 1...If thats not the most lop-sided qualifying final W-L record in history I'll go he.

The club doesn't get any where near the same return for crowds in finals as they do for crowds in the home and away seasonSaintDebi wrote:I agree, but I imagine there will be the same arguments re numbers able to attend that were heard when many wanted the R14 game against the cats moved to the G.Premiers2009 wrote:rubbish that we dont get one at the dome i agree.

Think you are onto something...how about if the top team played 8 th and the 8 th team risked elimination...now theres an ideaSaintersss wrote:How about the fact that the team that finishes fourth has to play the best team and the team that finishes first, only has to play the fourth best team...
Seems pretty obvious to me...

Agree, I'm a bit concerned about Collingwood's recent form - Adelaide we have covered easily - we have no idea how we'd go against a full-strength Pies outfit this season.Baldock Rules wrote:Hope Adelaide finish 4 th.This week at AAMI could decide it.
As for the finals, the Final 5 is no doubt the best system of the past 40 years....it gave the top side a clear advantage over 2nd and 3rd, who in turn had an advantage over 4th and 5th.
The current system has 3 more sides, but only 2 tiers of advantage not 3!
AND.....the finals money goes to the AFL - not to the clubs - it's perhaps only the Granny where we can make some decent cash through selling packages etc.

Don't forget we scraped into 4th spot last year and hence had the same "draw" as Geelong who were about 8 wins ahead of us.
Now the roles are reversed.
I'm happy as long as we get a SEVEN DAY BREAK.
Anything less than that would be an OUTRAGE and make the whole point of finishing on top WORTHLESS.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

FWIW, I reckon it won't matter who we play first up - we don't have a statement to make or anything like that regardless of what people may say - BUT the Prelim is what I'm looking forward to. More than any other game this year, I reckon our blokes will take the Prelim by the balls and go out there to prove they can do it. Three failures in five years will still be fresh in their mind and they will be out to prove a point.
I can't wait for this final series!
Shows you how effectively Ive purged that game outta the memory banksmick13 wrote:Prepare to.saint66au wrote:I hear what you are saying, but as it stands we will potentially have 7 more wins than our opponents in Week 1...If thats not the most lop-sided qualifying final W-L record in history I'll go he.

has that been stated as fact by the AFL..or just wishful thinking on your part?kaos theory wrote:We are guaranted a 7 day break if we finished 1st or second. We are NOT guaranted a 7 day break in 3 or 4th position.
