this is a great result for the saints. armo and eddy are next in line for midfield spots, and both are tough nuts who could be useful against geelong in a week's time. dempster seems to be making a really, really smooth comeback from his knee injury. and lynch continues his good form. great for depth.

it's great for the saints that with mcevoy in the ones, rhys stanley is putting up his hand in the reserves. he's a first year player and not even 19 yet but has now played 14 games for sandy, getting a total of 12 best votes. very solid for the kid.

better, almost, is tom simpkin. he's a rookie who's been showing really good form at sandy, popping up frequently in the best. 4 sandy reserves games for 10 best votes, and 10 sandy seniors games for 13 best votes. seems to have slotted in nicely, whatever he's doing.

i didn't see the game, but surely 5 goals would get him in there? pretty silly.

geary bog (here, anyway) surely gets him a run next week in place of eddy? good to see armo and smith kicking goals as well.

paul cahill didn't play anywhere this week - an injury niggle? or is he seriously out of favour?

Yeah good to see Geary play well, he's been in our starting 22 all year for mine.

As for Smith, I think there is something about him that could see him become a handy player, he has an air of confidence and determination about him, similar to what you see with Goddard and Hayes.

IMO this bloke will get the absolute best out of himself, I just hope he has the talent to match the endeavor...

Have names been left out, or was every one of the bests one of ours?

Anyones that played local footy knows that the naming of players in the best is a joke.

i saw that game and lynch was okay but no way was he BOG. makes me wonder how much attention should be paid to what the "bests" say.

The coaching panel submit those bests to sporting pulse......we do not know the jobs each is assigned so we cannot comment on bests list....eg, Lynch may have played his role in the fwd line structure perfectly...opening up space for Sautner.....which goes a long way to Sandy winning

it's all judgemental and subjective, i know. just didn't think he had enough of the ball.

That changes this significantly...

Interesting to see that the coaches couldn't find a spot for Heyne, was he playing selfish rather than team orientated or did the coach just want to keep him from getting ahead of himself...

yeah, in general i reckon the bests are fairly arbitrary from week to week, but overall there's some useful information in the aggregation of them. and for those of us who don't ever get to sandy games, they're really all we have to go on.

With the skills and attributes he has (very good skills, ball winning ability, serious speed, etc), he could be a lot better than "handy". It seems the fact he was rested for the second half of last season (because they thought he may have had the beginnings of OP) was the only reason we got him so low in the draft (in the 60's).
Before he was rested he was apparently starting to dominate games and I think I read that he is from country WA, so he probably hasn't had a heap of great training till the last couple of years. If he's OK fitness/injury wise he could be outstanding. The fact he's doing well so soon is a great sign.

players who didn't play this round:

heyne (in tassie with seniors)
x clarke, allen (long term injuries)
montagna, dal santo, hayes, goddard, riewoldt, gilbert, s fisher, baker (rested)
l fisher, maguire (injured?)

also:

smith
miles

what happened with these two? were they maybe taken to tassie, because the saints always like to have three fit players hanging around just in case there are warm-up injuries?

good to see three of the dropped players in the best this week - geary especially would have to be a pretty good bet for next week. also very good to see simpkin in the best again at vfl level. the kid's up to 20 votes from 13 games which is really good for a rookie.

at vfl reserves level, good to see mcgrath in the best again. 28 votes from 12 games, an excellent record! seems to me that he's progressing pretty well for a very young gangly man without much footy background, so he'll be thereabouts behind mcevoy and stanley if king retires this year.
