From 1960 to present
Probably one interesting inclusion, but I have gone for skill and courage.
One interesting inclusion!!
Koschitzke - you are joking. Not even close.
Peckett - serviceable and consistent but not in the best of the last fifty years
Vidovic - what Stinger said
Zac - why not put Ben McEvoy in as well
Joel Smith - same as Peckett.
Thought the OP did a pretty good job.
Might be inclined to put Milney in in place of George Young for team balance. Ross Smitth too but in place of who?
Maybe Bob Murray instead of Barry Lawrence as well.
Nice work The Sainter
It might help if people could tell us when they started watching the Saints (or at least watching the Saints closely). For instance, for a 12 year old, you might have only seen 3 players in a particular position - a 60 year old might have seen 20. That gives you a very different perspective. Not saying that one is automatically better than another, but it just adds a little bit of info and context.
Just a (hopefully helpful!) suggestion.
I've been a Saints fan all my life, but really only watched closely since the 1980s.
Everyone is in entilted to an opinion. Opinion's cannot be wrong but they can be bloody stupid and any best 50 years Saints side that has Dawson, Lazer, Frankie, Smith and Kosi in it is interesting to say the least. No second ruckman just lazer, luckily we dont play anyone.
The Sainter wrote:Just to let you know a little about my wing man Lance Oswald. He came to us as a quality rover from the country and played 107 games for us from 1957 to 1963. He became one of the best centre players in that period representing Victoria. Lance was a magnificent long kick often kicking goals from near the centre line and kicked 104 goals for us. He won our B&F in 1960 and 1961 and left at the age of 26 to go coaching in the country after being replaced in the centre by a young player called Ian Stewart.
I remember him well, he was very pacey too. But, he suffered from the "Frank Sinatra" effect. Bing Crosby once said that a voice like Frank Sinatra's only came along once in a lifetime but then added " Why did it have to me in mine?" The "Ian Stewart" effect was the same, at least for the first 6 years of his career with us. He polled 6 Brownlow votes in 1963, Lance got one after doing well in previous years. I've never read an "official" reason as to why he left though, as you say, at age 26.

My age is 72 so if i have missed anyone in my team just put it down to old age From the back line:
M. Hudghton V. Howell N. Burke
T. Barker N. Roberts B. Lawrence
G. Burns I. Stewart L. Oswald
D. Baldock (C) N. Riewoldt (V-C) G. Young
N. Winmar T. Lockett J. McIntosh
C. Dietrich R. Harvey L. Hayes
interchange S. Loewe K. Neale A. Morrow I. Cooper
there are quite a few of today's players like Goddard, Dal Santo, S. Fisher
Montagna, Milne just to name some who could well be included when their careers are finished as they are all top class players.
Not bad. Frawley a better player than Max, had to consistantly beat better Forwards - Ablett, Dunstall,Carey, Modra,
For Max - Lockett and Lloyd only 2 consistant quality FF's.
Great back up though
R Smith instead of either Neale or Loewe.

Nice one ,, 72 years old hey and still following the Saints. Bloody hell , talk about a stayer.
Mate , I'd love to have a few frothies with you one day and listen to your stories ,, I imagine you'd have quite a few. I'm curious though. Why weren't you at the 97 GF ?
Not a bad team ,, and as you've said ,which is very impressive ,, players you've seen. +1

One hell of a team sainter. good work. would take an awful lot of beating.
IF we win the flag this year - I'll be very interested in ppl's thoughts 2 weeks after the GF. Might be half the sqaud in there
I reckon Kosi would be lucky to be in our best team of the last 10 Years, let alone last 50. I reckon he would agree as well.
Saying that a player isn't worthy of a best team from 50 years of footy, is not saying the player is no good though. The bar has been set incredibly high, so only the very best of the best are included. Personally I love Kos, I love the way he breaks packs and pulls in ripper pack marks in an era when they are as hard as ever to take. He still hasn't reached his zenith though.

no way he makes the forward 6 at this stage. who would u drop from sainters forward 6?

Well I was born in 1989. Started going to the footy about 1993-1994. Here's my best Saints team from 1989 to 2009.
B. Justin Peckett Danny Frawley Jamie Shanahan
HB. Max Hudghton Brendon Goddard Sam Fisher
C. Austinn Jones Nathan Burke Nicky Winmar
HF. Barry Hall Nick Riewoldt Jason Heatley
F. Stephen Milne Tony Lockett Stewart Loewe
FOLL. Peter Everitt Robert Harvey Lenny Hayes
I/C. Andrew Thompson Luke Ball Jayson Daniels Lazar Vidovic
EMER. Gavin Mitchell Leigh Montagna Steven Baker Matthew Lappin
NOTE: My memory of football only began in about 1993-1994 and my INTELLIGENT memory of football only began in the 2000s, so apologies if this list doesn't reflect players you remember or anyone that I have missed out. But I think I got everyone.
The really really exciting thing is... if one of our players (eg Roo, Kosi, Milne... anyone) really turns it on, and is on fire, this year in the finals.
Can you imagine.. in ten years time... saying "Well (fill in the name) ... he's arguably our greatest ever... ten goals in a grand final... five goals in two other finals... in the only unbeaten team ever...
Wow, it gives me a chill just thinking about it! Bring on the finals!

No way....love Milney but George Young was something else, one of the greatest ever. I was only a little tacker but I once saw him fly so high for a mark he reached the ball on the way down and marked it while he was upside down heading for the ground. True story. My first ever Saints jumper had 27 on it and I've stuck with that ever since - and pleased to say the current wearer of that great number has not let it down.

Agree Roxanne Georgie Young was an amazing silky skilled player who created goals out of half chances...Didn't have to decide between him and Milney...had room in my forward line for both!!
Never take a backward step even to gain momentum.....
