Gardiner was, at best, even with Blake and Mumford at the ruck contests, but had the most influence around the ground.
err please explain then GT's recruiting of Knoble and Rix???? Please tell us how these two fit in??
GT would never have recruited Gardiner.
Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....
They were the best ruckmen available that we could afford and we were trying to acquire one after the loss of Everitt.....
recruited by the recruiting Dept....
Capuano was before his time.....he sacked him
Knobel was for pick #48 and couldn't get into the preiership team...
Ackland was a seriel underachiever at Port and was Pick #28...he finished 8th in the B&F in 2005.
Brooks was a First Rounder at Port secured when Everitt left......a touted junior he did his knee...
Michael Rix was recruited as a back up ruckman for pick 49 after making the VFL team of the year
Then there were rookies
Oliver....did not quite have the presence or size
Stone.....a backman who played well in the Ruck in the two's....super fit...not good enough
Van Reehanan.....a giant project kid who unfortunately got injured
if Ruckmen were not rated....why recruit so many in search of one....in the end he got frustrated and resorted to Blake and Kosi because at least they were AFL level footballers and said he did not rate useless ruckmen.
He actually believed after some of Kosi's dominant performances (2005) especially in the final against Sydney.....he would make a gun Follower, perhaps the best in the AFL.

That's not the point.....about the abilities as a coach....they are subjective
it was about the inaccuracies of the thread and a line trotted out by a ridiculous media....whose propaganda is believed by too many....it really does irk me....
IMO
Was GT a good coach - Yes....his record says so
Was Alves a good coach - yes....as above
Was Sheldon a good coach.....he was OK
Is Ross a good coach......yes he has clearly proven that.
are any of them great - NO, only Ross has the opportunity to become great...
Any great coaches at StK........ONE..

GT is a former coach of 100 odd games.....
The point of the thread was a comment towards our ex-coach about the importance of ruckmen......because if you believe the media GT thought all ruckmen were useless.....and obviously the writer of this thread did believe imbeciles like R.Walls.....ffs...
I pointed out what GT has stated many times.......he rated GOOD ruckmen (of which M.Gardiner in one) and NOT gumbies......unfortunately he had a couple in his time......
ther was NO reason why GT was even bought up tonigher....moreso in a ridiculous and inaccurate sledge.....

Hes an ex coach? he topical, in the media, free to comment on our club when he sees fit......why the nervousness when hes called into question?
I think people who suggest such things on an internet footy forum need a dose of perspective.
That aside,I'm happy with my boy Ross and equally happy to say I have been since day 1.

Anyone who bags someone who has had a positive effect on the club in any way or form , past present or future isn't much of a clubman in my eyes.Teflon wrote:Why?The Fireman wrote:GT bashers need to pull their heads in.

So cutting to the chase...GT started with an elite ruckman..and ended up with Rix after a truckload of draft picks.
Obviously a master trader at work.

Aww well boo hoo...lets never say Grant made a mistake then..FFS some get ridiculously precious. The guy botched our ruck set up for years - he had 5 to get it right. Why cant people get to grips with that?.....The Fireman wrote:Anyone who bags someone who has had a positive effect on the club in any way or form , past present or future isn't much of a clubman in my eyes.Teflon wrote:Why?The Fireman wrote:GT bashers need to pull their heads in.

Even G.T. has acknowledged R.L. as the better coach so that should be dead and buried. The question is can ruckman win you games. We should give this a couple of different categories.
1. Tap ruckman only good for centre bounce and boundary throw ins. Lucky to stay a kick behind play but will give you a 70/30 chance of winning the clearance.
2. All rounder. 50/50 at the clearance but can stay a kick behind, reads the play well and can take a mark.
3. The competitor. Modern day ruckman who rarely wins a tap to advantage but can compete and has groundskills. Can run all day take a grab and on occasion kick a goal. Surprisingly not much taller than the ruckmen of years gone by.
Lastly pick now a)Aaron Sandilands b)Michael Gardiner c)Dean Cox or d)Hamish Mcintosh
