If anyone is keeping Maguire out I reckon it's Sam Fisher.
Decision making has not improved this year. Almost all indicators have dropped. Bottom 4 in the team for tackles - McEvoy lays more tackles.
The team has taken a quantum leap and left Sammy behind. I really wonder what's going on with our reigning Barker medalist.
Bringing in Armo doesn't fix the team balance. The spot that needs to be filled is 3rd forward and there's only one man for the job. Bring back the Gwilt.

to be fair, he has been tagged in recent games. opposition forwards are paying much more attention to him because of the publicity from last year and his performace.InkerSaint wrote: Decision making has not improved this year. GWILT IN! we need a mid-sized fwd to play a defensive role on either mackie or enright. those two are crucial to the cats' defence and to take out one would go a longggg way to winning the game
p.s. rooke may play a job on sammy fisher to reduce his input

Sam's role, to a large degree, has been usurped by Gilbert's role and Gilbert's continued improvement.InkerSaint wrote:If anyone is keeping Maguire out I reckon it's Sam Fisher.

The last few weeks has exacerbated the problem with the re-shuiffling of the back line due to Max coming in.
Very happy to have Sam just doing his it in an excellent back line.

Fisher leads our defence in rebounds and groundballs. He's right up there in contested marks and spoils. I don't see the tackle stat as significant. He's been playing a lot on key targets and belting them. I think he's had a better season this year than last. The last couple of weeks haven't been great. His opponents the last two weeks haven't done much either though.InkerSaint wrote:[Sam Fisher's] decision making has not improved this year. Almost all indicators have dropped. How many of those games did we win? And how many did Jimmy play as a forward?borderbarry wrote:Should be calling for young Lynch to be given a go before
Gwilt. Jimmy has played the first eleven games for very little return fpr a half forward.
Lynch is going great guns for Sandy and will be a great asset for St Kilda next year.

At least if Lynch plays, poeple will stop talking about Zac's game against Rocca.Bernard Shakey wrote:How many of those games did we win? And how many did Jimmy play as a forward?borderbarry wrote:Should be calling for young Lynch to be given a go before

Lynch is like Watts...tall and lightly built...
Lets not rush him and allow him to build some muscle on that 85 kg.....
Nick Naituini is 4 months older and 11 kg heavier...not to mention more gifter...and even he is not yet capable of playing 4 quarter football.
And we need 4 quarter football against the Cats.

Watts did his ankle in his 2nd game and could not play ever since. Even in Amateurs he couldn't train.stinger wrote:saintsRrising wrote:Lynch is like Watts...tall and lightly built...

Bring Gwilt back, see what he can do against the very best.
We need to know if the players perceived to be big improvers, are up to the pressure, ala: Geary, Mini, Zac, Gwilt, McEvoy, Ray, Blake, Gilbert, Kosi & Bakes.
This is a big test and we need our preferred structure out there to see how they handle it...

I don't know why you are raisng the other Watts...who had several years of development when he joined us and was no longer a skinny kid.
Watts and Lynch....last years picks are both skinny.. Nat...is older and not skinny...but still cannot play 4 quarters at AFL leve.
My point with Lynch is not to rush him.

Fisher is so important to our game... his season to date has been exceptional (excluding the past two games)..and aside from averaging 21 disposals a game (6 less then Dal), he's been holding his opponent to < 15 disposals most of the time...
Drop Fisher and playing Geelong will be so much harder.
gwilt was brought in because he's hard.
wouldn't be suprised to see him standing next to Mooney or steve Johnson for a bit of argy bargy and psychological warfare.
or even standing between reiwoldt and scarlet...that would be fun

Gwilt, Maguire, Armitage - we're starting to get a bit antsy about our favourites getting selected eh?
The problem for all 3 (and Dempster, Lynch, and Steven, and any other guy trying to get a game at the moment) is the same, and that's the success of the guys playing ina winnning structure. Not passengers makes it hard to earn a gig.
For Gwilt it's the forward line - he's possibly most interesting as a midsize half forward has made the structure look better over the last 2 years. The Saints have been predominantly playing 5 dedicated forwards, so, he's still got to displace one of:
Kosi, Reiwoldt - not going to happen.
Milne - not going to happen.
McQualter - giving us forward pressure and tackling such as we haven't had in years. His improvement, IMO, epitomises the rise of the '09 Saints.
Schneider - early critics have gone pretty quiet, doesn't tend to have huge games, but sticks his tackles and very reliable by foot when he gets his chances.
We've rotated other players into/through the forward line on a needs basis, and while Gwilt has some flexibility (can play down back), the backs he'd need to displace are probably at least comparable options up forward.
For Maguire and Armitage, it's similar only harder. Hudghton had trouble breaking in and he only missed AA at the last cut last year... and the speculation that the structure was worse with him in has been rife.
The defense has been incredibly stingy. 2 of our 3 key defenders are not only shutting down their opponents, but refusing to put a foot wrong by virtually never turning the ball over. The emergence of Dawson makes it just about impossible to get a gig. Similarly with the mids, the great play of Farren Ray and Jarryn Geary means there are simply no midfield spots to win.
At the outset of '09, you'd have expected the best 22 would have had Hudghton, Maguire, Armitage and X Clarke cunning for the spots of Zac Dawson, Jarryn Geary, Andrew McQualter and possibly Clint Jones and perhaps Jason Blake. Not one of those 5 players has been anything less than good, which leaves them awaiting drops in form or injury.
Great problem for the club to have.
